A couple of months back I was linking to a link to a link... and on and on. Whatever webpage I found myself on had a two photos of a restraint belt-handcuff setup much like the Tom Horn style.

Unfortunately, my computer locked up and I had to reboot and I lost the page. I'm having a devil of a time trying to located it or other information about the restraint.

The Tom Horn restraint has a wide leather belt that secures around the waist, as did this restraint. What was different is with TH, the arms, which were crossed in front, were secured with a wide leather strap that cinched the forearms to the belt at the belly. Each wrist was then held in place by a chain (and, I assume, a padlock of some type). The variation I saw had two, less wide straps that secured the forearms and each wrist was secured by a handcuff.

If anyone knows where I may locate this restraint, please post.

Thanks in advance, and a happy New Year.

Ian,

Many thanks for your response. The TH restraint that you noted is very close in construction to the one I saw (somewhere). The major construction difference is that instead of a chain and padlock to secure each wrist, the one I saw used a very short chain with an attached handcuff for each wrist.

I was looking at these restraints from a security standpoint and I think the other model (with cuffs) would offer more security than the classic TH (with chain and padlocks). In addition, although putting either of these restraints on a "problem" individual would be difficult, I think the one employing cuffs would be a little less problematic.

From an escape standpoint, what do you escape folks out there think?

Go to:
www.mrescape.com (Steve Baker's website).

I think you're thinking of his "Escape Proof Challenge Belt", found in his "store" on the website. I've been in it...it's very secure when put on properly.

As far as escapability, the regular Tom Horn belt will not hold anyone in a secure manner at all.....it is a magician's item, not made for legitimate challenges. The Baker Challenge Belt is a different story. It was designed to hold a worthy escape artist at bay....what I mean is this: It was designed to make a fool out of ANY other escape artist that might be moving in on your territory. The wise-acre escape artist that is moving in on your turf is challenged to escape from your belt and can't, however you can!!!

This belt is ESCAPE-PROOF!!! Hence, the name....Escape-Proof Chalenge belt. LOL! I know for a fact that it is escape proof, because Steve Baker told me it is and he dosen't lie....yeah, as if. Only Steve Baker and the person who buys the belt can escape from it.....so, I guess it isn't EXACTLY escape proof.....you just have to learn the secret from Steve and he will include that secret in his LOW, LOW price! I believe it starts at $350.00 and goes up from there. But HURRY!!!! There is only one left!!!!!

If you want something like this, just go out and buy a set of cuffs, a heavey-duty weight lifting belt, and a few little things from your local hardware store and make it yourself, you will save a ton.....and maybe no one will figure out the secret to your belt!!! You could possiblly have the first and only really escape-proof challenge belt!!! Well, that is until you lock Steve Baker in it.....he can get out of anything......(as long as it has large oval links, chains, and SEALED padlocks on it). LOL!!!!

I hope this helps,

Cheers, Mike (aka) The Dark Deciple

"deciple"

??????

The correct noun is "disciple", from the Latin discipulus (learning pupil) derived from the verb discere (to learn).

As I learned it, there are three rules to magic:

(1) always honor those who came before you;

(2) always respect those who compete with you;

(3) never let your audience make you forget rules 1 and 2.

Michael,

Yep, that's the device I was referring to (found on Steve Baker's website). Strange thing is that I'm sure this wasn't the site on which I originally saw the Escape-Proof Challenge Belt. Oh, well... still answers my inquiry.

I will, however, continue on my search for a restraint that can be used for prisoner transport that is "escape proof." Some inmates/prisoners could put many a professional escape artist out of business with their ability to free themselves from restraints. ;>)

Not being an EA, I am guessing the challenge belt would use gimmicked cuffs? Gee, if I had an few hundred $$$, maybe I'd find out for myself.

Sgt.Rick

I created the Challenge belt in 1968 to stop
an escape artist who claimed he could get out
of anything!
When he saw the belt he turned it down flat!

No one to this date has escaped the original
belt,I've even let them use tools...no knives
or blades of any kind, but picks and keys.

The new and improved belt has a crotch strap and
a neck collar that locks on in the back.
THIS BELT IS ESCAPE PROOF!

I design a special version for the Escape Aritst
who invests in one,one with his own abilities in
mind.

Thank you,

Steve Baker

Mr. Baker,

Thank you for the info. I appreciate it. Wow... didn't know this type of belted restraint had been around that long.

I would be curious to see if there would be a market outside of escape artistry for the device, i.e., law enforcement and corrections. Unfortunately, knowing the budgets (and sizes) of these fragmented agencies, I doubt that they would purchase at its current price. (Of the 18,000 LE agencies in this country, well over 90% have less than 12 officers.) Mass production could bring down the cost, but it would take some commercial market investigation to see if a viable market truly exists and at what price it will bear. It would also take some significant seed money to go commercial.

I do know one concern officers would have involves accessing the cuff's key hole and the double lock (to uncuff the prisoner).

Couple more questions.

Is there a standard cuff you use with the device... S&W, Hiatts?

Are there photos of the other devices you mentioned?

Hi all,

For anyone wishing to make any sort of Australian Belt Muff (the same thing as the "Tom Horn" belt) and virtually the same thing as the basis for any sort of other "challenge belt", you can make them all yourself for a very small investment in materials.

For starters, get yourself a good heavy weightlifter's belt.

You can find these in solid leather at any Wal Mart for around $20.00

Used at garage sales for as little as $4.00

Next, go to a Tandy Leather store or any other leather craft supply store and pick yourself up some untreated 2 inch wide belt leather, a couple of 2 inch wide D rings to attatch handcuffs or chains to, a packet of medium sized "speed rivets", a rivet set punch, a leather hole punch and 'Voila!"

(you will also need a hammer and box cutter to set rivets and cut any leather)

You now have everything you need minus chains or handcuffs to make any variation of transport type belt degined to either be made for an escape artist or that will stop a bonafide prisoner.

Cut the belt leather sections to size, punch holes in them and the weightlifting belt for the rivets, attatch D rings or cuffs or whatever, mate the two sections of the speed rivet together, hit the rivet set punch with a hammer and all is solid.

Total cost?

Without cuffs or chains...

Heavy leather weightlifting belt - $20.00
All leather craft supplies including rivets - $25.00

There you have it. A little do it yourself project to pass the long winter with!

Nevermind the long winter. With basically NO skill or prior training you can whip most types of restraint belts together like this in a mere hour or two!

Have fun.

Dark Master, have you ever thought about making a "Steve Santini <Dark-Master> Challenge Belt" and marketing it??? If the cost was reasonable, I would buy one. If the actual cost could be kept under, say, $50.00......you could sell them as low as $100.00 and still turn over a nice profit. It could be used for entertainment as well as prisoner transport.....think of the possibilities!!!!! Just a thought.

Hi Mike,

No.

I had not thought about it.

All through my career in escapes, lock work, and designing products for high security prisoner transport I really had not bothered with a belt to challenge anyone with.

There are already a number of fine regulation police transport devices out there that will effectively stop any self styled "World's Greatest Escape King".

For instance, an ordinary Blue Box with ordinary double locking cuffs and belly chain will do just fine.

There was a time I put out a line of escape artist items but really at this point in my career and life I cannot be bothered to do so.

I am simply too busy performing as an escapologist to be concerned with such matters.

Besides, if I were to ever challenge another escape artist, it would not be with a leather belt.

Instead, it would probably be with a pair of my "Titan Transport" cuffs or even my modified Smith and Wesson cuffs that take Abloy padlocks.

(Both of which can be seen on this site under "Santini Inventions").

And, the person wearing them could then be granted free access to all of the picking tools they cared to try and it would not do one bit of good.

Is it really proper to describe how to build Mr. Baker's belt? Granted it is an adaptation of the Belt and Muffs, but his is unique to him. In addition, by all accounts one of the first things people mention is the fine workmanship that the belt clearly receives. Those comments are by the owners of the belts.

For about $200 in supplies I can build a sub-trunk but that doesn't mean I'm going to be able to get the quality that someone who is skilled in such things can do.

I'm sure you wouldn't like to have your concepts explained in detail on how to build them posted on the web.

Pardon?

I can see nowhere in my post where I directly refer to how to build Baker's belt.

If fact, were I to have done so, I would have gone into far more detail regarding the threaded bolts, padlocking buckles, etc.

What I do see is that I outlined how to make any number of restraint leather belts designed for both actual restraint and also escapology.

With cuffs and without.

Obviously, and since you are using an unknown user name here you have been sent over to counter what the "Bakerites" consider to be an inflamatory post.

Please read it again.

It covers a number of do it yourself restraint belt concepts.

There is nothing wrong with that and in fact anyone looking at a mere picture of any belt restraint or muff with half a brain could make it up themselves or hire someone else to do it.

Big deal...

Steve Santini.

P.S. Feel free to go ahead and detail how to build any of my original concepts. If a person has the loot and creativity certainly anything can be built. If they have the loot and creativity that is!

Pin-head, don't come over here without posting your name or known "handle" and try to talk smack. Go back and read the post again and you will see that there was no exposure of anything. And just for the record, Baker's belt is NOT escape proof.....just go to Ros Walker's web-site and watch the video of him getting out of one while locked inside a body bag. That is not the definition of "escape-proof" in my book.

Santini, I got your back, brother.

Me's and Wanna Be's:

On behalf of handcuff and restraint researchers/collectors everywhere, let me remind all the "me's", the "mini me's" and "the wanna be's" that have come over here of late at the behest of Mr. Baker that this site deals with restraints and handcuffs.

My post was about a restraint and mentioned the addition of handcuffs.

If you all want to sing the praises of Steve Baker, why not go over to the "democratic" Magic Cafe board that he lords over.

BTW, if you wanna talk escapes, why come here in the first place?

Or for that matter, why bother going to the Magic Cafe either?

Neither seems to be a forum inhabited by many real professional escapists anyway.

The variation I saw had two, less wide straps that secured the forearms and each wrist was secured by a handcuff.

If anyone knows where I may locate this restraint, please post.

Thanks in advance, and a happy New Year.

It was great when we used this site to talk handcuffs.
Now there is more of this bickering going on.
Is this guy right or is that guy right?
Come on people lets talk cuffs.
As for me, I'm voting for Pedro!
