I received an e-mail yesterday from a reporter from the Winnipeg Free Press. His name is Dave Sanderson and he is the collectibles columnist. He wrote to me to ask if I could assist him on a piece that he is working on. This piece is about a local resident who collects escape artist memorabilia. He came to this web-site and read my article from a year ago about the Houdini-Radner auction. He was wondering if he could quote me on some of the info contained in that article and ask me to tell him of my collection. He mentioned that the main story will be about Bruce Thomson and a project that he is working on. I will let Bruce explain what his project is about and it sounds like it will have great appeal to all of us here.

I am not sure if I will have much of a presence in the article, but I am always glad to help when I can. Dave will be sending me a soft and hard copy of the story which will be out an a few weeks, Jan. 28th to be more specific. Dave says that he "Usually gets ¾ of a page, with lots and lots of pics. Saturday circulation is some 250,000".

The above is the title of the new article that appeared in the Winnipeg Free Press on Jan. 28th.
A nice picture of Bruce wearing a sweet pair of Cummings and Bean Cobb Leg irons dominates the page.
Bruce was quoted as being fond of collecting articles from lesser known escape artists and has expressed his opinion that Houdini artifacts are overrated and overpriced.
I on the other hand, just love my Houdini owned handcuffs, pictures, and autographs. This admiration was mentioned in the article and was good for about 3 paragraphs.
Sorry Bruce....I guess that is why there is 2 sides on a coin.
Handcuffs.org was mentioned and consequently, we should be seeing some new names appear very shortly. The Cannons show got a nice mention as well. Maybe some new faces will result from this as well. The Radner auction and my previous aricle about it got some space too.
All in all, a very nice article. As I say, any article about cuff collecting, is a good article.

Thanks Mark, for your input on the article as well as your compliments. My only problem with the article is the tongue in cheek photo captions, I mean 'Chains of Love'....like thats gonna bring out serious collectors.lol
I found reporter David Sanderson to be a pretty good guy, and he did not get a chance to show me the article before it was printed, so the 'Hardeen Houdini' error went through.

The photos are great, and I like how the Great Clark poster gave an antique look to the whole thing - very much a nostalgia image.

Houdini stuff IS over priced and he IS over rated!

He's nowhere near as great a guy as Mark Lyons.

Yes, he had a mistake or two in there but only you and I would know it.

The article and picture of you ought to spark some interest with the readers. I hope you make a good contact or two. I just hope they don't offer you any Houdini stuff. If they do, you are more than welcome to direct them to me.

Houdini coudn't be that bad a guy....he died in the same hospital that I was born in......sort of, he died in the Old Grace Hospital and I was in the New Grace Hospital. It must be called the Old New Grace Hospital by now though.

Well Bruce, Congratulations of getting some good press and I hope it will lead you to another one or two.

Well, it seems that the article has done some good afterall. I was contacted by the local magic club and asked if I would do a talk on the subject of restraints. Thanks to Ray Starr mentioning my interest in escapes, this has expanded to cover that as well. Will let you know how it goes.

That is very good news. I thought that once the article got into the right hands that you would get a good contact out of it. Please let us know how it all goes. I hope that will lead you to another speaking gig somewhere else and keeps going in perpetuation.
