Unusual Houdini items on ebay

Description (revised)

This 5.5 x 8 inch photograph shows the young Houdini, smiling and naked except for a g-string, displaying a chain of handcuffs. The photograph was mounted by the photographer (Bushnell of San Francisco) on mounting board, 7 x 10 inches.

The back of the mounting board has a note, written and signed by Houdini with an old-fashioned pen:

Below this there is a note in pencil:
taken 1899 July
I was 24 years of age

The condition of the photograph is good, but it has some light scratches and scuffs. The mounting board has a damaged corner, lower right, a dog-eared corner upper left, and holes where it was tacked. The reverse has residue of tape and paper, but the writing is clean.

The photograph turned up along with some other Houdini memorabelia among the belongings of my good friend's grandfather, the writer Benjamin Rosenblatt, when he died in 1963.

Written on his personal stationery, dated April 22, 1926, The letter reads:

My dear Van Dien: -



Thanks for the copy of the minutes. Dr. Wilson is here with me for a few days. Stay in Chicago at the Princess Theatre until May 1st.

It is signed Houdini, and the handwritten PS reads:

The letter is in good condition. It's a little dog-eared on the top and left edges.

The letter turned up along with some other Houdini memorabelia among the belongings of my good friend's grandfather, the writer Benjamin Rosenblatt, when he died in 1963.

AUTHENTIC HOUDINI BOOKPLATE, AND SIGNED LETTER BY HARDEEN

This beautiful sepia bookplate, 3 x 4 inches, shows Houdini in profile. "Ex Libris Houdini" The bookplates were made by Houdini's wife Bess after his death. Hardeen is mistaken about Houdini using them himself, but his letter establishes the authenticity of this item.

The bookplate appears to be the "steel engraving" that Hardeen mentions in the letter. The bookplate is in fine condition, except for the merest hint of a fingerprint near the edge, above the picture. The onion skin cover is folded in two places.

The letter, to Joseph Harmon Fries MD, dated Jan 20th 1944, is handwritten on the stationery of:

Hardeen

Successor to his Famous Brother
Houdini

The letter reads:

My Dear Joe:-



After my visit to your home the other evening it was indeed pleasant to see your long-standing friendship with my brother Houdini, and with myself, expressed by such a fine collection of items on us both.

I'm looking forward to seeing what new material you'll be able to add. am inclosing a steel ingraving of Houdini that he used in all his books.

The collection few none sic have is a remarkable record of some very interesting years. [The last line is illegible.]
