I wondered who had had nasty accidents whilst fiddling with handcuffs and if you would care to share, i ask because last night i managed to snap a pair of eights shut on my finger which now has a large chunk missing out of it and there is blood everywhere......not pleasant.....and then you try explaining that one at casualty (emergency room for those over the pond
) to make it worse the cuffs were in the locked position when they closed and the key had to be turned several times before i could release my finger....OUCH!!! so who else has had a painful experience in this way?
Marie:
I've known a few cops to get nasty cuts from handcuffs due to out of control prisoners, but you asked for personal stories.
About a year after out first son was born, my wife and I went to see some friends that were about an hour's drive away. We had forgotten the kid's teething ring, and he started whining. The only durable thing I could come up with for him to gnaw on that was big enough such that he couldn't swallow it or poke himself with was a set of handcuffs I had in my back pocket. Hey, they were round, just like a teething ring, so I figured they might work. So, I latched one cuff to the handle of his car carrier, double locked them with none of the ratchets exposed and let him have at it with the loose cuff.
Turned out he really liked the things, more so than his plastic teething ring. I think it had something to do with the cold metal. So, when we got home, I latched the cuffs to his crib and never again bothered with the plastic teething ring, which was great for us since he was then in the process of learning how to throw things and I was tired of having to pick the plastic ring up and toss it back at him.
Yeah, we got some weird looks from people, but what can you expect when the kid's dad was a cop?
A week or so later, my wife was going someplace, running late, and in her hurry just handed the Peerless teething ring to the kid without locking them down to the car carrier (I'd given her a handcuff key for her keyring). She wound up getting smacked in the face with them, busting her lip and chipping a tooth.
The moral of the story: never deviate from standard procedures when using handcuffs, particularly with an infant.
And, yes, when number two son came along, he too used handcuffs for a teething ring, and so did my grandson.
