I was just watching an episode of Green Acres where Oliver was Deputized. In his Deputy kit was a nice pair of Caveney cuffs with non-original key. As expected he got handcuffed to his wife Lisa. Very similar to the famous I Love Lucy episode. I am surprised that I did not remember seeing this episode before.

I have just been watching an episode of Columbo....dont laugh, i like Columbo, and funnily enough the murderer was called the great Santini....sorry Steve....lol, Columbo challenged him to escape from some "high security cuffs" apparently the best in the department!!! they appeared to me to just be a standard pair os Smith and Wessons from that decade, sorry guys dont know the model didnt get a close enough look and my talents at spotting are not yet that good, does it annoy anyone else when tv shows dont make the effort to do things properly?

No, those were Haney handcuffs. The key was an extra $12.00, but it was an official deputising handcuff key.

Dear Marie,

That was the Columbo episode title. It consistently is ranked amongst the best episodes of the entire series. It also was about the last performance of Jack Cassidy, who played the Great Santini. He died in a fire soon after the episode was filmed. "Now You See Him" dates back 30 years now, to 1976. The handcuffs themselves were typical, ordinary handcuffs. Columbo had the lock replaced with a lock using the same special mechanism as the club owner's office door, which had been picked. Columbo's reasoning was if the suspect, Santini, could pick the handcuff lock, he could have picked the office door lock.

When Jack Cassidy and Shirley Jones were married, they had a son, David Cassidy. He went on to star, with his mother, in The Partridge Family and become idolised world-wide.

Steve Santini can tell you more about that Columbo episode, should he choose to do.

What I CAN tell you about that particular episode is that is where I got my chosen last name for stage use.

From the age of 14 on I was doing escape work under my birth name but somehow "Steve Adams" just did not sound fitting enough.

My mother was a big fan of Columbo and I saw that episode with her.

I in turn became a big fan and, well, the rest is as they say "history".

I became a big fan of Columbo while the shows were still current and on the T.V.

That kind of dates me too!

BTW, I travel and tour all over the place so you may very well not have to come to Canada to see me perform.

Very shortly I will be in Branson Missouri and the 3rd and 4th week of April I will be in the Dominican Republic where I will be doing resort performances.

I could be wrong and probably am, but I thought it was called The Great Santini.I loaned it out and never got it back.I see that there is 3 Columbo
DVD's out that probably cover all the episodes.The boxes do not say what
episodes is on the DVD inside the box. Does anyone have them and can tell

"Now You See Him" was episode 36 of the 69 Columbo episodes made. It was number 5 of season 5, airing 29 February 1976. Jack Cassidy was the guest villain in three episodes, making him second only to Patrick McGoohan.

Excellent question!
I know that there are half a dozen episodes that Barney gets locked up in one of the two cells, but I do not recall a handcuff episode nor do I remember seeing any handcuffs. I recall the State Police bringing in suspects from various manhunts, but no cuffs were shown.
Barney handcuffed to Otis would have been a funny show if it had existed.

I just saw a nice shiny pair of Peerless on Green Acres today.
An episode called "A prize in each and every package" (season 4--1969) has Oliver being arrested by Deputy Clyde Prentiss for suspicion of jewelry theft. The deputy placed the cuff on Oliver's hand but it was not very smooth and it looked like he did not practice his moves very much before filming. Maybe this is because the actor was more adept at nautical themes. He was Alan Hale of Gilligan's Island.

Hello,

A few days ago, I saw the I Love Lucy episode in which Lucy and Ricky get handcuffed together, sans key. The handcuffs -- stated in the episode to be Civil War era, for whatever that is worth -- appeared to me to be Adams, with the round, not the twisted, links.

The episode's humour was very physical. It well may be that the handcuff bows were of rubber or some material other than steel, providing more give and flex to avoid bruising. That would be unknown, though.

I now have the answer to the above question that was asked anonymously. In the episode "The Manhunt", an escaped he convict found Barney sitting on a tree stump while conducting a road block and handcuffed him with his own cuffs. A frame by frame viewing shows a shiny pair of Peerless.

I hope that our European friends understand what we are discussing as they may not have the opportunity to watch these classic TV shows.
