Black Box

Several deputies report hearing of a video which shows how convicts escape from black boxes, by breaking the box with a comb. None have actually seen the video or have personal knowledge of any such escapes. Do any E.A.'s or officers have any helpful knowledge? If true, is the fault unique to the black box, Hiatt's blue box, or both?

Long ago when I invented the prototype Hiatt Thompson Blue Box 2, which is made out of folded steel for hinged handcuffs only, Chuck Thompson ( of Hiatt Thompson) and I were discussing Blue and Black boxes made of high impact ABS plastics in detail.

We discussed many pro and con features of such devices but breaking them apart was not one of them.

Not to say it can't be done, just that we were not aware of it.

I do not think it would be an easy task to force the bozes apart by force or with something simple like a comb.

The only way I can imagine a comb would do any good is if it were somehow used to push out the metal hinge pin on such boxes.

But even then, the hinge pin would only come out a certain distance before to would hit either the bow of cheek plates of the handcuffs in the box.

And, even if someone could somehow get the hinge pin completely forced out, I would have to wonder how the box would come completely apart because the aircraft aluminum clip around it's middle would keep it mated together.

As an inventor of restraint improvement devices, if someone can break apart the ABS boxes with a device as simple as you mentioned, I would certainly want to see how it was being done!

I sincerely appreciate your advice, with regards to the black boxes. I printed your well written and authoritative reply and have distributed it. Thanks also for inventing the Blue Box 2. Since we normally use hinged cuffs, we acquired several blue box 2's and they have worked well. Many federal institutions will not release prisoners without the application of a "black box," hence we retained the black boxes and some chain cuffs. They have accepted the blue box and blue box 2.

This rumored comb vidio has been reported from multiple sources. It was described to me that the inmate actually broke the black box. If I ever can get or view it, I will e-mail you. I did view the ASP/pocket knife video loop making the circuit.

Perhaps your friends are referring to the video of the tattooed inmate disengaging the pawl of the cuffs he is wearing with a comb, while he is wearing the black box over the cuffs. He did not, however, break the black box.

Sounds like the cuffs were not double locked.

Who is David Clark, the friend who helped you invent the blackbox handcuffs?
There is alot of talk that these handcuffs were also made by an inmate, is this true?
