I recently bought a pair of German handcuffs that I was told were WWII vintage. They look very much like the August Schwarz type from the 1930s that you have pictured, however there are no numbers, characters above the "Deutsche Polizei" on the coff, no indication that any had been removed. I just wondered if you could state an approximate value (antique roadshow??)

Also something I WISH I had bought that you show on your site is the German Grip from the 1970's. Any idea where this might be available??

strange just "Deutsche Polizei", not more? (pre) WWII versions are usually additionally marked with "D.R. Pat" (for Deutsches Reichs-Patent" and sometime with "August Schwarz, Berlin S.W.11". Post WWII versions, which were first made by Carl Reher and then by Heinrich Hagge are marked "Schutzmarke" and "Deutsche Polizei". And the latest versions also have a serial number.

I have one strange "Dutsche Polizei" model that is not marked "Deutsche Polizei" but just with "EB33" and the number "1".

this is exactly the inscription on the cuffs I bought: Deutsche Polizei, D.R. PAT., August Schwarz, Berlin S.W. 11.

I didn't go into the full detail because I merely wanted to note that there was NOTHING above the words "Deutsche Polizei".

The pictures of similar cuffs on this site have numbers and/or letters above (a serial number??)

I am not sure, if this number is a serial number or if it refers to a certain police unit. But I have seen some of these "August Schwarz" handcuffs without number. Lars Holst has one in his collection with a number on the stationary bow (please see picture).

PS: @Lars: Heinrich Hagge never made "D.R. Pat" Deutsche-Polizei handcuffs, since he started manufacturing this model not before 1977.

Thank you for your response, Atame. This picture you included looks exactly like the pair I have except that the key is black which I noticed and was mentioned specifically in a site to which a link was included in a pevious response.

I'm not sure what you meant in your P.S. to Lars. If the cuffs say "D.R. PAT" does that mean that they were made after 1977?? The site seems to indicate that they were made as early as 1930.

- EUR 162 (US-$195)
- EUR 210 (US-$252)

my PS was meant as a small hint to Lars that he described his "D.R.Pat" Deutsche Polizei as Hagge Handcuffs, what is wrong, because Hagge started to produced "Deutsche Polizei" handcuffs more than 30 years after the "Deutsche Reich" (that's what "D.R." stands for) has ended. Nevertheless the Hagge "Deutsche Polizei" handcuffs look very similar to the early August Schwarz versions. Here is the timeline of the "Deutsche Polizei" production:
- Mid 1920s until (end of?) WW2: August Schwarz, Berlin
- 1950s until 1977: Carl Reher, Hamburg
- 1977 until now: Heinrich Hagge, Bad Segeberg

So, Lars, AFAIK (and I have this information from Mr. Hagge himself), all "D.R.Pat" were made by August Schwarz, the "Schutzmarke" versions with hand hammered rivets were made by Carl Reher and the version with "machine hammered" rivets were made by Heinrich Hagge (the first version of these was made in cooperation with Carl Reher).
