Tower D.L. swivel with patented stops

Hi,

I have a Tower double lock handcuff with swivel linkage.

The odd thing is that this set has the patented stops and I have only seen this feature in the past on chain linked sets (standard 3 link twist chain).

I always thought that Hugo Foth made many of the Tower swivel linked D.L. cuffs and that he did not incororate any of the patnented stop devices on them.

Has anyone else seen a Union Hardward swivel Tower D.L. cuff with the stops?

Info would be appreciated.

Sadly, these cuffs are not in the best condition and one of the stop devices was removed a long time ago.

But the other one is still there.

I have both Towers round link and swivel link with the stop locks and
also have heard that they were not made in the swivel link model.

I have wondered how to tell the difference between Hugo Foth and
Hardware cuffs if you don't have the box the cuffs came in. It has
been said that the stops were not that easy to use and that is why
so many have been removed from the cuffs.

Thanks for adding.

Except for the set I have, I have never seen of a swivel w/ stops.

Now I have.

I do not know how to tell Foth and UH cuffs apart and agree the only way is with an original box.

Yes, I had also heard the stops were often removed not just because they were a hassle to use but also because they are quite sharp points that tended to injure fingers and hands.

One old cop I spoke to said that one way he could carry Tower cuffs in his pocket and not have them accidentally lock shut was to push 2 spent bullet casings over the tips of the bows.

There is a full pair of the round link Tower stop cuffs at the Police Museum here in Winnipeg. I was allowed to handle them, and came to the conclusion that they were simply too awkward to be practical. The problem was that on several tries to use the cuff I came close to slicing my thumb open, almost like a golf divit, so speed was greatly reduced by the feature. Cuffs like the Cobb, or Bean with reset buttons, strike me as having the best feature of the pre swingthrough cuff age.

This is news to me. The swivel was introduced by Union Hardware just about 100 years ago. I did not know that they still were selling cuffs with the stops.

Hi Joe,

Well, what I have here is in fact a Tower DL cuff that looks like what I always knew as a "Union Hardware" cuff with a single link like a Bean Cobb and the same sort of clevis swivels.

And, one of the cuffs has the patented stop intact.

One the other cuff it has been removed or busted off some long time ago.

They are in hard shape and brown but that is what they are.

If anyone wants them for thier collection I have no problem with getting rid of them.

The only Tower stop cuff that I have is the Union model.
I would love to have a 3 link and a single lock model.
Anybody have one?
