Is there such a thing, I've never heard of one in Peerless. The only one in my mind that even come close is the Peerless Model 400 which if I'm not mistaken is stencil steal, not stainless. But sellers on EBAY keep calling the peerless cuffs they are selling Stainless.

Hi,

the only stainless Peerless handcuff that I know about and that I have in my collection is shown below. It has the patent dates "PAT.FEB.20.1912" and "NOV.23.1915" stamped on, but not yet the "MAR.31.1925" date. The serial number on both cuffs is 82. Does anybody know about other stainless Peerless cuffs?

Best,

Michael

I didn't know they made stainless cuffs of model 1915. now I'll have to find and buy a pair of those, when will the madness end

Those look like the second model Peerless made, and I am not sure when they came out with the 3 model handcuffs. I am not exactly sure when the Germans developed Stainless Steel and I would have to go looking but it was being made prior to WWII and that means in the 30's. The rest of the world found out during the war and after the war because it was kept a secret. I believe Krup Steel was making all the stainless steel until after the war when we figured out how to make it for ourselves.

I've never seen or heard of a Stainless Steel handcuff made by Peerless, and I have doubts about your model 2 cuff being stainless. Has it been tested or is your opinion based on the appearance of the finish? I have a cuff with a close serial number to yours, and it is nickel plated.

According to the internet: "The first true stainless steel was melted on the 13th August 1913. It contained 0.24% carbon and 12.8% chromium." It was several years later before it was used commercially in the US.

Hi Michael

You have a nice cuff. That is the lowest serial number I have seen. But I also doubt that it is Stainless. I have seen beautiful nickel plating, chrome plating and blue(or blackened) cuffs.

I am putting together a list of early Peerless cuffs with as many details as I can find. If you don't mind I will add this one to the list since it has such a low number.

Hi everybody,

the handcuff in question definetely is not nickel plated and it is not chrome-plated either. It shows just the bare steel. That it is stainless is my assumption, as otherwise there should be at least some rust after all the years from the day the cuff was made until now, but it is absolutely clean. It also does not look as if it had been de-rusted with HCl or something like that. I will try to find the cuff in all the boxes full of cuffs that I have (I really must get organized!) and will bring it to the meeting in Antwerp, so that you, Stan, can have a look at it.

Joe, I would be very happy, if you could take the cuff into the list.

Best wishes,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Have you done the magnet test to see if it is ferrous metal?

Mind you a magnet will still stick slightly to low grade stainless steel.

I'm not an expert on different kinds of metals or there magnetic properties but it is my understanding that a magnet will stick to all grades (even high grade) stainless steal.

I own a (DIRTY HARRY) 44AMP & 357AMP AUTO MAG. Anyone like me who knows there firearms (as I am a BIG collector of firearms) Knows what an Auto Mag is. The first AUTO MAG, not the 5 copies that fallowed. This pistol is made of EXTREAMLY high quality stainless steal. I took a magnet off my fridge and low and behold it stuck to my AUTO MAG. So I don't think the magnet test will work to see if it's stainless or not, unless you are trying to find out if it may be aluminum, which I didn't think they made back then. But hey, none of us thought they made a stainless steal pair either. I wonder if it wasn't re-plated, in the gun industry they have a type of finish that is a flat finish like the one shown. This finish is applied to slides and makes it look like bare metal, sort of a brushed stainless steal look, used on pistols that have plastic frames. I wonder if someone didn't do that to this pair of cuffs. ?

Anyway, looking forward to knowing more about them,
James

Hi Steve,

I will check with a magnet, as soon as I have found the cuffs. I think I will search them now.

Best wishes,

It's not the "quality" (in terms of cheap vs expensive) of so-called stainless steels that determines whether they are magnetic or not, it's the alloy. Your non-magnetic stainlesses, like 304 and 316, are not heat treatable, and thus limited in strength. I would be surprised if they were used in strength critical firearms parts.

The ordnance grade stainless steels, and similar heat treatable alloys are somewhat magnetic. They are also somewhat less "stainless" than the stuff they make boat cleats from. There's a jillion tradeoffs in material selection.

I'm not sure a magnet will help much. I used a magnet on some "Stainless Steel" handcuffs, and here are the results:

NOT Magnetic Stainless cuffs:(magnet will not stick)
Yuil
Henry
Clejuso Rost Frei
ASP frame only. Bows are magnetic

These are marked Stainless, and are magnetic:(magnet will stick)
S&W 938
Bianchi 500 (One face of one cuff is not magnetic)
H-Thompson 1010
Lionheart
HWC
Valor
Cobra
Casco
Command Cuff
Winchester
Chicago 1200

Well the part that I was talking about, that my magnet stuck to, was the barrel, which includes the Chamber. So this stainless has to be strong in order to deal with the high chamber pressures of the cartridge (around 45,000 psi.) So I do know that magnets will stick to high strength stainless steal. So it is interesting to find out there are some kinds of stainless steal magnets won't stick to, I guess I'll have to look for some. James

I am surprised...doesn't everyone here know that it is wrong to steal handcuffs and magnets?

IT has been said my many people on this site that some stainless steal is magnetic and some is not, so your test with a magnet would not work to see if something was made out of stainless steal. I will admit that I'm not an expert on all kinds of stainless steal, but I went around my home and tried my magnet on everthing I could find and here is what I found: I tried it on the sink, pots, pans, knifes, the toaster, stove, graders, scissors, finger nail clippers, everything marked STAINLESS STEAL, and the magnet stuck to all of them. There was only two items that were not marked stainless steal that I thought were stainless that the magnet would not stick to. Try it in your home. You will see.

Now I don't own a pair of S&W 938, and I don't know the purity, or make up of the metal used in the 938. So I can't say if a magnet will stick to them, or if I don't why it didn't stick. But I will tell you that if the magnet is the only thing you use to determine if a pair of cuffs is stainless or not, you will be passing up a couple of pairs that are Stainless just cause the magnet stuck.

Key in Point: The magnet trick DOSE NOT work EVERY time.

Thank you, This is the real James Brown (JDB), all others are just imitations.

Let's get back to basic science. Iron is always magnetic. Steel is made from iron plus one or more other metals. Therefore, steel is magnetic. Even stainless steel. How magnetic a steel item is depends on the type and amount of the other metal(s) alloyed in with the iron.

As for the 938 cuffs, they attract to a magnet about like a refrigerator, stove, metal door, or screw driver, at least with the U shaped magnet I have.

A word of caution for you all:

Last year I was in a hardware store and left with a sink, some pots and pans, knifes, a toaster, a stove, some graders, some scissors, and a few finger nail clippers.
As I was being arrested, I tried to explain to the cops that all this loot said Stainless-STEAL! So I did.
I get released sometime next next year.
