Hi Michael,

Many thanks for very nice pictures of extremely nice irons. How interesting is modern cuffs like Peerless and S & W compared to them? The Swedish Police Museum in Stockholm also have a set of Mühlenfeld... I guess they will never trade them away

Very nice cuffs over there. I really like the padlock cuffs.

In your article in the annual, you stated that "Berliner" cuffs are defined as cuffs that feature a single keyway that unlock two bows simultaneously. (not exactly your words, but something close to that).
Would you agree that the term "Berliner should apply to the belt in the 4th picture and the nice cuffs in picture 5?
The Bar cuff is commonly called a "Berliner Bar Cuff" over here in the US and I would call the belt a "Berliner Belt and cuffs". Leg Irons are also known as "Berliner Leg Irons"
Even though each of these restraints have 2 keyways and to not open both bows with a single turn of the key, they have the "Berliner" design, look and similar manufacturing.

What ever label is used to name these cuffs, they are some of the most rare and desirable restraints ever made.

yes, I thought you would like them! Unluckily these are not for trade as my friend told me, and when he says so... This friend of mine works for a police equipment company, and besides this he is one of the major European collectors of police head gear and patches. He has great contacts to a lot of law enforcement agencies and more than once he was able to get something for his (or my) collection that originally was part of a police exhibition, but not this time.

Patrick, the pictures were taken in the Bavarian Police Education Institute in Ainring, which must be near the city of Freilassing. I do not have the street address, but can find it out if you want. Before you go there you should perhaps make an appointment, as I am not sure, whether there is general public access to the exhibition.

Yes, Lars, police museums can be a horror for collectors like us. The worst thing is that very often the people who run the museums do not even know what they have and are not really interested.

Mark, I think it is absolutely correct to call the items in the way you mention. My definition of "Berliner" refers to the kind of restraint as shown in the 5th picture, but everybody will know immediately what is meant by "Berliner leg-irons" for example. When you say "Berliner bar handcuff" do you mean the Schwertfeger cuff? This one really looks very "Berliner-like", like two half Berliners on a bar. Most probably all these restraints were made in the same era and the same manufacturers.

Yes, these Berliner-style restraints are also my favorites, here is another one, which I saw on a Houdini-related site.

MICHAEL: since we are talking about the GERMAN BERLINER etc.., what class do you nice folks put the ULENFELD BARMAN cuff in ??? or would it be in its own class ???? thanks. joe

Hi Joe,

I think the Mühlenfeld (like the one on picture 5 above) also belongs into the group of Berliner handcuffs. Do you perhaps have information, why this cuff also was called "Dortmunder"? And do you still have the Mühlenfeld with folding bows? In case you ever want to sell it, I know someone who would buy it...

MICHAEL: i agree with you that the BARMEN is in the same class as the BERLINER, but because some of the BARMEN cuffs are actually marked that maybe they should stand on there own like the DELESTATIUS verses the RANKIN.....i don't yet have access to alot of my old papers etc as we are still unpacking & sorting from our recent move, but ( don't hold me to it ) it seems to me that the DORTMUNDER was named that because it was made in DORTMUNDER.. is there a DORTMUNDER, GERMANY ??? sad to say, but NO longer have the folding bow MULENFELD cuff... wish i did.... take care... joe
