I'm pretty shure they did. At least that's what I've herd from my sources. I'm shure the experts on board can anser this one as I am no expert.

Yes, the S&W 938 is stainless steel. Marked with a "S" on the moving bow.

Yes they are. In the early 80's I snail mailed S&W trying to find a key for some model 94's with no idea how to properly describe the key, which I had broken ( see earlier comments re: jammed 94's).They sent me a colour glossy catalog in resonse of all their handcuff lines at the time. I'm afraid I've lost track of the catalog but something I remeber distinctly was their listing of model 90 in stainless but if I recall correctly it was not called a model 90 but something else ( I'm thinking model 92? for some reason but it was a long time ago). Again I'm relying on pure memory. I also recall that it was described as being suitable for marine use where cuffs might be exposed to salt water/salt water air.I sure wish I still had that catalog now would be a handy thing to have.

no S&W model 90 cuffs were made of stainless steel... i suppose that some people could mistake a satin finish cuff as being stainless, but they were not............
MODEL 90 -- regular, blue, or nickle
MODEL 91 -- polished nickel
MODEL 925 - AIRWEIGHT - nickel
MODEL 926 - AIRWEIGHT - polished
MODEL 94 - high security cuff .... of course there were the belly & lead chains.............
MODEL 800 BELLY CHAIN - cuffs separated.....
MODEL 810 BELLY CHAIN - cuffs in center....
MODEL 820 LEAD CHAIN - with (2) cuffs......
MODEL 830 LEAD CHAIN - with single cuff.... then came the next class...
MODEL 100 etc etc............joe

Makes sense Joe. I knew i wasnt mistaken about them at least being offered for sale. If I recall correctly they were expensive too ( which is likely why you don't see many of them). It oesn't make sense that they would have been included in their catalogue and not available for sale so there must be at least some of them around.

Well actually, you see alot of them, every pair of cuffs on ebay is a pair of stainless steal cuffs, no matter what the make or model number is. Or at least that is how it seams.

What dose the Model 938 look like anyway. Dose anyone have a picture of one, so if we see it, we know what we are looking at?

Actually, there seems to be two versions of the 938 cuffs. One version is posted by Lars near the top of this thread. Here are 2 links to pictures of the two versions of 938's (notice the placements of the serial numbers, and the 'S' being on the lockcase of one version and on both bows on the other version).

Hello all,
Despite the fact that one type of alloy was discovered in 1913 using Chrominium does not mean it went into mass production shortly afterwards. There are many types of stainless steel alloys and it took time to figure out how to mass produce it and make it ecomonical to produce. It was the Germans(Krupp Iron Works) that figured out how to mass produce an alloy that stood up against salt water. It was high in Nickel content and not as magnetic as common steel. There are many different alloys of stainless steel depending on what qualities you are seeking for the application. In addition, some are harder to shape, form, heat treat, and machine into the desired product. You will find surgical stainless steel is different from what they use for knives and guns to the stainless they use in cookware and the list goes on.
My mind might be a little rusty on my metals but I was fortunate enough to have an instructor for metallurgy that was alot older and had not only a doctorate in Mech Engr but his speciality was metallurgy. And one last thing, stainless steel will rust, just not as fast as ordinary steel. And yes, I do have a degree in Mech Engr and Electronic technology.
