The item is listed as such (I'm not the seller):

Original Antique Iron Police HANDCUFFS Manacles

Item number: 7755473589

I saw no mention of make, model or year. I'm guessing they are Bean Giants, but no mention - and no serial # and no key. At $710 w/ 21 bids and 2+ days left, what do the bidders (presume to) know about this item that the seller doesn't?

It looks like a Bean Giant.....but I am a little suspicious of it. It looks like it is a little thick for a Bean Giant and the finish is a little too nice for it to be original. Hmmmmmm. The winner is going to hit the roof if it turns out to be a KUB or McColl repro! However, I will laugh myself silly if that turns out to be the case. Yes, I know.....I'm rotten or shall I say......evil. LOL!

Cheers, Mike

It's an original Mike.

And the finish is GREAT.

If you look closely, you can notice it has that same old time nickel plate as on the Hiatt 104's you just got from me.

Not the gleam of a replate job but the slightly dull yellow original old plating.

As for the thickness, it is normal.

It would be good if there were more pics of it but aside from a rust stain on one arm it looks in pretty darn good condition.

One of the nicer ones I have sen in the past 2 years.

yes, this is an original. It is a later model and that explains why it looks larger - it is.
one of the noticable differences is that where the bows fit into the lock body on the earlier models there is less of a pronounced difference (more smoother transition)

I seem to be finding out a lot of people from this site are the one's bidding against me on the EBAY site. The one that I haven't figured out yet is one that happens to be bidding on this pair: sellitall4moola, dose anyone know who this is? Is it someone from this site too? I notice they buy and sell a lot of Cuffs, sometimes after selling for example a pair of S&W 94's they will turn around and bid on another pair of S&W 94's. I understand that some collectors start with what they can get then trade up to better condition cuffs buying and selling. But something leads me to believe that this person may be doing so for profit. But in any event it helps to know the person you’re dealing with, especially when they roll with two different names.

James

WOW, $730 dollars, I'm glad I started my collection with the American swing thru design 1912 and newer, I'd go broke buying cuffs at that price. The most I have to spend is $300, for two or three pairs and the rest is all cheap.

God forbid that someone in the US or on eBay should make a PROFIT. Why do people think that is a dirty word?

WOW, no where in my posting did I make remarks that making a profit was a bad thing. I love making a profit on things I sell too. In fact if you read my posting; I clearly make note that a lot of people from this site are one's that I'm bidding against on EBAY, meaning that the one's I'm bidding against are fellow collectors. And I made a commit that from there bidding and selling history it seemed to me that the person who I mentioned might be doing it for profit and not collection purposes.
But I guess that you use what ever reason you can find to take your frustrations out on someone else. I wish you would use your name instead of going Anonymous, that way I'd at least know who I'm talking to. I'm starting to find out that SOME (not ALL) people on this site use Anonymous or fake names when they write something they are not proud of. If you can't leave your name with your posting you shouldn't post at all. Just leave your opinion to yourself.

The cuff is original and from the Iver Johnson factory.
Amazing Michael, please don't mention my name in the same context as KUB please. We make for very different markets.

Yes, Ian's work does not compare to that common drub. He will be up a gum tree or in the cactus when he is mentioned in the same sentence as a mass produced handcuff company that he considers drango or the bulls wool. His is high quality apples and not the ning nong that clutters the ebay pages.
Ian, I think you will a happy Larry now that I clarified that.

I also noticed retired again. And some others . So worth listing and as stan suggested depending on the hassle you are willing to put up with. At the very least I would suggest putting a dozen pair or so as a lot and see what happens with them rather than selling them as one whole lot.

what are the things to look for, to know if an item has been replated or is simply in very good condition?

Hi, the things to look for with replating is shadowing of areas caused by pieces being too close together, eg. the bows being fully open to plate them all but shadowing the frame near the hinge ( this usually appears as a darker area) this also happened near the wire tied to the cuff for hanging in the plating bath.

Different metal composition might have an effect on the look of the plating, like the circular marks ( in the case with the bean Giant) around the rivets on the lock case front. This could also be a trick of the light with the camera. The hinge rivets, and bow and frame near the hinge don't appear replated nor does the marks on the edge where the cuff has been resting ( I assume it has been on display sitting on it's edge.

Hope this help.

Best to always see these things first hand, photo's don't tell all.

As for condition, the keyhole isn't worn and the button are in which is a good sign, as for how it works, there is no key and the cuffs cannot be said to be working.

I collect fishing lures along with millions of others that do. We will buy any and all vintage lures even if we have three of the same. These are used for trading or selling to get money to buy what we need. There are several guys that wont sell you a lure but will trade for one. JDB was just mad he had competition on Ebay and if he wanted the cuffs he would have bid a fair price to get them. If you think about it, its pretty bad when a guy that already had the set was willing to pay more then the guy who didn't. I like the guy that won the cuffs, its guys like him that will raise the value of everyone's collection, not the guy sitting back trying to get them for nothing. Just my idea of what collecting is all about. Take care everyone, and buy every set you can get, they are the key to trading for what you need. Tom
