I thought very much the same thing, but it feels nice to hear it from the experts. I didn't think they were that uncommon, but worth a little more than what I paid. But it feels good to know.

Now I probably will sell my old pair to help cover the cost of this pair, and allow another fresh collector a chance at a pairof H&R.

Hello James,

I think you got a good deal. If I'm not mistaken, there was a cache of New-in-Box H&R Supers that were discovered about 4 or 5 years ago in PA (I think). Maybe yours is one of them. I picked up one for about the same price, nice, but used, no box, papers, etc. for around the same price you did in the mid 90's (or, at least, before the "find"). I believe I paid a fair price for the time they were purchased. Just goes to show you what a discovery like that can do to the value of an item when it suddenly becomes more common than it was previously thought to be.

This is a peril of collecting, and points up one of the difficulties in generating a "price guide", at least one that would be near accurate for any length of time.

PAUL: you are correct that i hoard of H&R SUPER MINT IN BOXS were discovered, but it was about 8 or 9 years ago.... a fellow whose name i do not remember bought out the remains of an old ARMY/NAVY surplus store... all the STUFF had been in storage for many years until he bought it..... at the time, he contacted me & told me that he had a FEW H&R SUPER cuffs in MINT condition in the ORIGINAL BOXES.... i asked him how many & he told me a 18.... he wanted a HEFTY HEFT price for EACH, but i paid it & purchased the 18 pair....after we made the deal he told me that he MIGHT be able to get a FEW more & i told him that if he did to let me know... well he waited to make sure that i got the 15 & then called me to let me know he ROUNDED up a few more AFTER MUCH MUCH HARD WORK at trying to acquire them.... i paid the HEFTY HEFTY price again for a DOZEN more !! to make a long story short, i ended up buying 40 H&R cuffs all in original boxes.... the last 10 cost me $160. each !! the 1st 30 EVEN MORE !!! not long after, he even offered me 50 pair of HARVARD cuffs & 50 HARVARD leg irons mint in original boxes..... after i had made all of my purchases, he confused to me that he had acquired 150 pair of the H&R'S & get this -- approx. 350 HARVARD cuffs & 250 HARVARD LEG IRONS !!!! now you know why there are so many MINT in box HARVARDS around.....i did not buy ANY of the HARVARDS.....sure glad that i did not as i would have lost my A on them.... i have suffered enough on the H&R's..... joe

So what are a pair of Harvards new in box going for now that the warehouse had been found. I just bought a pair of used but good shape Harvards and want to know if I could have gotten a better deal on New ones? I would like, if I could, to trade off all my cuffs without boxes and step up to like new,in boxes if possable.

JAMES: not lately, but over the past few years there have been 100's of HARVARDS mint in box put on EBAY......prices for the most part were all over the place, but i would say ( if they sold )average prices were $45. to $85.... joe

I wish I would have in into collecting cuffs back then. I just paid 50.00 for the pair I bought, used, no box, no key, but in real good shape. I would have loved to find a pair in the box with a key. Most important is the key, had they come with one I would have known that a standard key dose not work. I tried a standard key the day the cuffs arrived and almost lost a good pair of cuffs. The key got jammed and would not come out, and then there looked like there was a piece of metal broken off and floating around inside the cuff. Luckily I practiced a little patience and was able to get all the parts to go back in place and get the key out. But it was a big surprise at first, now I know.

JAMES: good to hear that you got all going right... once key is inserted - NEVER - turn the key COUNTER CLOCKWISE (except to turn key back to take key out) as 9 of 10 times the key will get stuck.... also NEVER use a normal peerless key or peerless type key as the bit is to small & again key can get jammed... joe

I stuck a "standard" key in a set of Harvard Leg Iron's many years ago, got them in 1958, $3.00 shipped from NYC to KY.

Knowing to use finesse not force, I was able to "pick" off the double lock feature while the key was stuck in the keyway. Once the double lock was off the standard key was free to be removed.

The H&R supers I just bought are not the same as the H&R supers I have. I got to looking at them and looking at old forum and found out the one's I have are model 1 (no groove) the one's I bought have a groove, so they must be model 2.

So now this leaves me with a question, what (collector wise) is the difference between the two? Is one worth more than another?

The first model (without grooves) is rarer than the second.

When you get a minute, go to Cannon's Great Escapes and check out the books available. If you are going to collect, you really need the literature and it's fun reading. Will make you want all kinds of stuff you don't really need.

I guarantee the H&R article will give you a headache.
