Brass Hamburg 8 Eights ??

I wonder if these are $1,200 Sleepers too??

I have both steel and plated brass Hamburg 8 cuffs. It is possible that these were plated at one time. I don't think the brass Darby was a $ 1225.00 sleeper. I think someone bid high to get it and got screwed in the process.

I have a question about these Hamburg 8's. I looked at the sample pair on this site and at the pictures provided in the auction and there is one thing that stands out to me.

Maybe it's the lighting or the picture quality but the pair on the auction seems to have a very visible hinge pin, but the pair on this site, you can not see the hinge pin. The pin I'm talking about (just incase my lack of knowledge confuses you) is not the BIG center one between the two cuffs. The one I'm talking about is the pin for each "BOW?" there is two of them one for each cuff.

Is the visibility of this pin normal, or is the picture lighting on the set on this site just hiding this feature?

JAMES & ALL :: if you look at the photos of the item on ebay, at 1st look the cuff looks good & made out of brass..... upon close examination, look closely at the clevis's as TO ME they look like they contain PLATING.... now look at the photo that is 2nd to last in the series that show the cuff fully open & you can see the UNDERSIDES of the round locking mechanisms that fit over the center pin.....photos can be deceiving, but they sure look like STEEL/IRON to me & NOT brassy....also, i do not like the FILE marks on the cuff in the 10th photo down.....some of the PINS look like brass as they are darker, but maybe the cuff is just brass plated.... the cuff is probably brass, but email the seller & ask him to check it....joe

OH.. But look how many sellers state in there Item description Stainless Steal. I think just about every pair on Ebay is Stainless Steal, so my nickel Plated Peerless 300's must be rare. Anyone want to start the bidding at say $2,000? Just Kidding.

I agree with Joe, that second picture from the bottom dose look like steel that is Brass plated. But I also agree that it could just be the light, and Poor picture quality. And the seller is quite convinced it is all Brass. Only the new owner can tell.

Just a thought...... The visible hinge pin is a different color, so could be a slightly different grade of brass. BUT if the whole thing was brass plated, surely the pin would be the same color as the rest of the cuffs?

I believe they are solid brass, and not brass plated. Brass plating is rather fragile, and would not have survived intact; with all the battle damage those cuffs show. In particular, the file marks Joe Tanner refers to would certainly have penetrated to the base metal.

The cuff casting and the pins are different brass alloys. The cuffs look like yellow brass, while the pins look like red brass. There are probably good manufacturing reasons for that. If the cuffs were plated, then the differences would not show.

I see what may be the remnants of plating around the keyhole, and on the pad beneath the steel locking pin. In the latter case, it may be a trick of the light.

My guess is that they were plated, the plating started to peel, and they were stripped.
