Two handcuffs

Hi.

I was just watching an episode of COPS today and it showed an arrest of a very skinny female methamphetamine abuser in Martin County Florida. She was so skinny that even while her hands were cuffed behind her back, she was able to remove a bag of this poison hidden in her underwear in front of her.
The interesting thing about this arrest was that the deputy used two pairs of folding cuffs (peerless or s&w I assume) on her. I have never seen this technique used before and have not seen it taught in any training. Have anyone here with some L.E. experience ever arrested a small suspect with dual cuffs? If so, what was your thoughts on this?

I also saw that and have never heard of that technique before. Did you see the orange belly chain with nickel cuffs used in Las Vegas?

Yes, I did see that. I have seen belly chains used in jails and prisons but never out in the field in an arrest situation before. The female suspect was being transported in the Paddy wagon so it looks like the officer gets his cuffs back and goes back on patrol without having to immediately go to the jail to complete his report.

I've never heard of that method as being 'proper' handcuffing. I do know you can take chain cuffs & place/cross them together in a manner that would fit on juvenilles & smaller female wrists.

Any Police Department training Officer with any Knowledge of Restraint techniques teaches cuffing Skinny offenders of this type to prevent them from Slipping their cuffs. It is a Technique that is taught by a number of departments.

Hello Mark and All,

Somewhere, I have the original leaflet that was issued with my Peerless hinged cuffs (circa 1992??). For suspects with small wrists, it recommended placing both wrists through one cuff (yikes!)and using the free cuff to attatch to a belt, or something. Anyone else remember this instruction?

Hi Bruce, good idea and I just tried them and they fit S&W 100's. They would work but add wieght.

I happen to have slender wrists. Most modern cuffs are difficult to slip out of, but some of the antique items in our collection don't close enough to be secure on me at all.

I was telling a police officer friend of mine about this and he showed me a trick that he uses. He took out his Smith and Wesson model 100's and twisted them so the chain was pulled tight, the double bows were crossed and the moveable jaws were pointing outward with the cuffs interlocked. He then locked my hands behind my back. Ouchee, my wrists were at odd angles, the opposing bow dug into each wrist bone and I had less flexibility than hinge cuffs. There were adjustment clicks left even though they felt very tight in spots. Unlike tight handcuffs this method presses tightly on on certain spots instead of uniform pressure around the entire wrist.

It was not long before I was calling him a jerk and he took the cuffs off. I hope he was just making the technique up and is not commonly used.

That method is not commonly used now, I learned of it ~1972 from an officer. When I went through the police academy in 1976, it was not taught.
