Hello gang,
I have a few questions about the Peerless 710 high security cuff I got in last week. I was expecting to open the boxes and see the familiar black housing and the Medeco lock I have seen in the pictures. The first thing I noticed before opening them was the Peerles logo on the box. It is a pair of regular chain cuffs, but they are both "right handed" cuffs , with the keyholes shown but the bows both moving the same way. It's just a logo but I would have thought they would have gotten their bread and butter product right!

When I took out the cuffs, the housing is a bright orange, and is marked on the back of the housing "BOA HANDCUFF COMPANY, INC." I have never heard of that. The lock does not say Medeco, instead it says ASSA on the keyhole face. The keys are marked ASSA then below that "Desmo". The keys also have the Boa Handcuff name on the back. I cannot find the Medeco name anywhere on anything but a short reference at the bottom of the instruction sheet stating the name is a registered trademark.
I am just wanting to be certain these are as secure and the same quality as the Medeco Peerless. Some of you familiar with locks may be able to tell me if ASSA is a generic off shoot or just what the deal is. The cuffs themselves are the familiar model 700's marked as 710's.
I don't mind the orange housing but I want to be sure these are the real thing and not some sort of factory second or prototype.
As always, thanks for the help,
Tim

Thanks for the link, but that just tells me that the people making the retro-fit kit think the ASSA locks are as secure as the Medeco. If they are made by Abloy, I am feeling better about it, but I was wanting opinions of persons who pick and shim locks and cuffs to give me thier two cents worth.
I was impressed with the Cuff-maxx articles on that site tho. Since the kit is also available for S & W cuffs, I wonder why they have not marketed them like Peerless has the 710. Again, my main question is are these locks as secure and pick resistant as the Medeco's formerly used. I guess I can live with the orange color.
Thanks again

ASSA purchased ABLOY, MEDICO, Multi-Lock, Sargent, Yale, Folger Adam and other lock manufactures in the last few years

Right now they are THE largest worldwide provider of high-security locks.

Hello,

sorry, just found this thread. I'm into lockpicking for almost 10 years now and had my fingers on quite a few so called high security handcuffs the last few years.

First of all: most of them are indeed quite secure, when you're in them. I did most of my picking not handcuffed, as I didn't want to break any tools or create scratches in handcuffs which don't belong to me, and am sure it's almos impossible to pick most of them when cuffed behind your back. Possibly could do it for the Rivolier, not sure about the HSS9, but I'd most certainly fail the clejuso or peerless.

I already posted about a few of these cuffs in a german forum, in case someone can understand a word here the link to the thread about the clejuso 101:
http://www.handschellenforum.de/forum/v ... .php?t=206
for the others just a picture of the picked 101 (left side is open) and the used tools:

@Orchid: from your list the HSS9 is the easiest to pick, such locks are used for letterboxes in Germany I tried my own pair quite often, which is surprisingly hard to pick open (takes several minutes for me) but easily to pick close when open - but that's just a random effect. I also tried a pair of Guenter(Atame)s HSS9s and a pair of another forum user, they were more or less easy to pick in both directions.

The Clejuso 101 were the first pair of High Security Handcuffs I picked at all, and yes, they are indeed difficult. But just because it's a good lock with 7 pins, no special skills needed, just normal pins. Average about 10 Minutes for me. But they have a big disadvantage: all Clejuso 10X are keyed alike, except if you're a german law agency and order an individual keying. That's the main reason I haven't bought a pair so far. Possibly less of a problem in the US, I guess almost nobody has that key there.

Another European manufacturer is Rivolier, they have locks very similar to the HSS9 and are no big difference in picking.

@Tim: Regarding the Peerless cuffs: I own a pair of the Medeco Peerless HS Leg irons which I haven't really tried to pick so far - don't want to spoil the fun to try this in some kind of bet someday. Did that with the black chinese HS leg irons and it really was quite funny, even though I got even out of the 4-way-key version of those. But I bought a medeco padlock having about the same mechanism as the Peerless on my last visit to the US, and I wasn't able to pick that so far, but it has 2 pins more than the Peerless and therefore possibly is harder. Medeco has rotating pins which makes picking them a unique challenge, I could imagine a modified hook could be of help, otherwise it's more like gambling than like picking to get them aligned.

Talking about the ASSA Desmo: ASSA has quite some reputation in europe (so has abloy, but the ASSA Desmo uses an ASSA mechanism, not the abloy mechanism which is completely different), but I never had the chance to pick one so far - until now I also didn't know they were used in handcuffs If there's indeed a Desmo in your cuffs (can you post an image of the key? Or just compare it to pictures you'll find on the net, should have the second row on the side to manipulate the second row of pins in the lock) I expect it to be about as hard as the Medeco, possibly even harder. It doesn't have rotating pins, but it has a naughty sidebar which could make some trouble. Can you tell how many pins your ASSA has? 8? That would be considerably more than the old Medeco A friend of mine has ordered Peerless HS Leg irons and Handcuffs recently, really looking forward to those now...

By the way: I think the medeco lock used in the Peerless HS is being phased out anyway, Medeco also has a new line of locks using the same basic idea of rotating pins but a different key layout. So possibly a change was needed anyway for Peerless and so the looked for alternatives and liked the assa better. Inserting the key into the old lock indeed was not the best.

And about BOA: that's also stamped on my Medeco Peerless keys. To my understanding BOA is the company behind the cuffmaxx device. They possibly once planned to produce own handcuffs, but then just created the retrofit kit and brought peerless to sell a HS version with the kit already installed.

From a locksmith's point of view the ASSA is a slightly more secure lock. While picking either one is nearly impossible, there are other methods available to defeat the medico cylinders that won't work with the ASSAs. That said, any method would be next to impossible while actually wearing the cuffs in the double locked position. Do keep in mind though that the 700's can be rapped and shimmed open no matter which lock they have. The model 510's were much more secure.

oops... Almost forgot... You should also check your 710's against peerless's recall list to see if they're among the recalled units. The recall affects models 700, 7030, 710, 703, 705, 7002, 7003 and 801.

Hello,
as mentioned in other thread, unimuc and i had picked succesfully an Assa Desmo cylinder. My first try was done in about 20 minutes, but i have repeated it two times, my best picking time was about 5 minutes. I have never picked sucessfully a Medeco, as i do not have a Medeco, i had tried to pick someones else Medeco lock without success, but just for about 5 minutes. But i think, Medeco will be harder to pick. This applies to locks on cuffs or padlocks, so i can lay it flat on table and pins in Assa cylinder move horizontally and remain in theri positions. An Assa mounted in a door is much more difficult to pick because pins are falling down when released. Picking Medeco seems to be independent on position because there are springs for each pin.

But be careful picking Assa Desmo of Peerless710: If you try to open shackle, lock can close in this position again. Now the only way back is picking again (but now with a lot of tension on cylinder because of internal lock of Peerless handcuff itself), it is not possible to insert key in this position. You have been warned!

Kind Regards
Andy58
