Peerless is conducting a voluntary program to repair certain of its 700 and 801 series restraints. Peerless has received reports that a spring in certain units identified below has failed, which could cause the locking mechanism to malfunction. Peerless is replacing the spring to ensure that the restraints meet Peerless' rigorous standards.

The 700 series restraints that are included in the repair program were manufactured from September 2005 to December 2005, and have the following serial numbers:

Model 7030 Oversize Chain Link Handcuff 099251 to 105200
Model 710 High Security Handcuff 011501 to 011550
Model 703 Leg Iron 098851 to 106000
Model 705 Oversize Leg Iron 011476 to 012615
Model 7002 Waist Chain 026526 to 027260
Model 7003 Waist Chain 032101 to 033025

The 801 series restraints that are included in the repair program were manufactured from May 2005 to December 2005, and have the following serial numbers:

Model 801 Hinged Handcuff 110201 to 134000

Also included in the program are any restraints sent for lock-related repairs from May 2005 to December 2005.

Only restraints with the serial numbers identified above or that were repaired from May 2005 to December 2005 may contain the potentially affected spring. Therefore, other restraints are excluded from the repair program. The Model Number and Serial Number are located near the key holes on the restraints. OUCH!!! That's got to hurt his bottom line, even as many cuffs as Peerless sells. This recall involves 49,890 sets, and that doesn't include the repaired ones from May to December. That's a lot of repair work.

Actually not. Or at least it seems so.

I have two sets of cuffs in the "suspect" range, but when I plugged the serial numbers into the website thing, I got the automatic response that they'd been repaired.

I thought that was a mistake.

So I emailed back, suspecting an error had been made.

Less than half an hour later, Peerless responded to my email, detailing where they had shipped the cuffs to the dealer/jobber, recalled them, fixed them and sent them back, all before I had waltzed my happy butt in there to buy them in the first place.

And all over the fourth of July holiday.

THAT is commitment to your product, and I have nothing but admiration and applause for the Gill family for their honesty and candor.

I'm not sure the problem is limited to the models specified. I have a pair of 801s, whose spring had failed. The cuff simply would not lock. I e-mailed Peerless, and got a swift reply. They repaired the cuffs and promptly sent them back.

If I had to guess, I'd say they had the temperature control on a heat treat oven go bad, ruining a batch of springs, which was missed by QC. I bet they have another test or three in the process, now.

You're right. That is definitely commitment. And it is so rare these days. One big thing that impresses me about Peerless is that you can send them a serial number from a set of cuffs asking when they were made, and Peter Gill will always respond with a date of manufacture. Now that's customer service at its best.

Funny, I wonder if Peter Gill is a descendant of Merle Avery Gill or Stella Frances Gill of Kansas City, MO.

Merle invented the "Lion Tamer" and "Flash Action Manacle" series of cuffs (Feb 11, 1930) and Stella invented the Gill "Figure 8" manacle (Nov 4, 1930). I guess they are related to each other, but have further info.

If any of you have any further contact with Mr. Gill why don't you ask him. That would make him a bigger handcuff icon than ever.

Save your breath. He has been asked that question before and says there is no connection. Stella was Merle's wife and her name was on the patent and other legal documents selling the rights to the cuffs.
