Peerless Model 1 Double Lock

Ok... something I'm either not getting, or the DL are seized?

Peerless Model 1 Dual-Link, dual patent date. The rachet and pawl work normally with the keys. On one cuff I can get the key to turn part way past the normal unlock and it feels like it double locks, but doesn't, not does the key continue on to the starting position. The other cuff, the key won't go past the normal unlock position at all.

I'm going to try soaking in WD40 for a couple of days to see if that will help.

Any other suggestions?

I have had some experience with the first and second models getting stuck. Soaking them might help but the best thing is to take the locks out and take a Dremel tool and wire brush them. If you go into the archives there are pictures posted somewhere of the lock and it was pretty tight tolerances and a little rust will cause the double lock not to function. Instead of WD40 try some of the stuff like liquid wrench or PB Blaster, stuff that is better at breaking up the rust. Also don't force the key too hard or it will break. I think somewhere in the archives I might have given advice before on disassembly of the locks.

Thanks Dorson. I will try liquid wrench as well. I would never attempt disassembly, I don't have proper tools for that sort of thing. I go by the Johnny-5 motto... No disassemble Stephanie, no disassemble.

I had the same situation you described and knew that the double-locking portion of the lock was siezed in place, which is not uncommon with the Model 1 lock. I alternated soaking the lock in kerosene and naptha for a couple of weeks, blowing out with an air hose, etc. and was getting no where. I was to the point of removing the lock (and dreading getting the thing back in place) when for no really good reason other than I had a can of it on the workbench, I squirted the lock full of spray electronics cleaner, let it sit a few minutes, jiggled the key in the lock and the thing turned loose.

Over the last few months, I've been using that darned stuff on other locks and such and it seems to be one of the best rust and grime removers I've come across. I'm no chemist, but the stuff is a mixture of naptha and ether, and it seems the ether is what does the trick. No fancy brand name; just the generic stuff from Radio Shack.

Thanks Franklin. Not sure where to get that up here anymore. There is no Rad Shack anymore. They all turned into 'The Source' and they don't carry anything with ether in it. I'm not 100% sure, but I think ether became one of those restricted chemicals.

But using the same idea, I'll start squirting all kinds of different smelly cleaners into the lock and see if I can free it.

It's not too hard to remove the locks from the model 1's. just drive the pin out from the top with something like a broken drill bit of the right diameter. Then work the lock out through the key hole till you can get pliers and/or small screw driver to get it the rest of the way.

A big lock mechanism can be removed through a tiny key hole??

The only pin I can see is beside the keyhole. Do you mean take the lock out from where the pawl is??

Naw, with my luck springs would go flying. Tried to take the trigger/hammer out of a S&W revolver once... nearly took my eye out with the rebound spring!

And yes, I got it... work the lock out by inserting something in the key hole to push it out... took a couple of re-readings to get it though... duhhhhh
