Sorry, but IMHO that is a ridiculuos price for ANY handcuff. But as they say, something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

Then again, I begrudge paying over $35 for a set of S&W model 90

A shoebox! Wow! You have that many? The boxes I'm using are so small, they only fit 1/2 of the cuff and so I have to use bolt cutters to cut the chain. To play with them I have to use a wire tie to put them back together temporariy. Its getting expensive buying those darn wire ties at Radio Shack!

Sorry Joe for being OT.

Very true!
The same could be said for antique firearms. Why pay thousands when a $250 gun shoots straighter and further? A Glock also looks more menacing than some English dualing pistols.

You have got a point there but a used car will decrease in value, a nice set of Wisner & Hoyt like these will get even more valuable as time goes by. Believe me, I have followed the values of rare cuffs over years. In a few years from now we might consider this price as a bargain.

Hello,

First things first. "Dualing" pistols, Mark? Are those anything like duelling pistols -- which usually came in pairs, so one could have dual duelling pistols, and one can see some extraordinarily fine examples at http://www.horstheld.com/.

As to the rest of this "been there, done that" thread, one never should buy anything in which one does not see the value or anything one can not afford...or chain nippers I want to acquire.

Collecting non-essential objects is comparable to dining out at restaurants. No one needs to do it and doing it requires having more funds than one needs to live in the material world. That removes it from the objective realm of worldly need puts it squarely in the subjective realm of wants.

This reiteration of what has been stated repeatedly -- the fate of the obvious -- is boring. To add an overlooked yet illuminating twist, imagine what your collection would be if you could have whatever items in it you wanted, with a few provisos, which also apply to everyone you know or ever will know: You get every item free; You must keep and reasonably care for every item, unless you give it away, getting nothing tangible in return; You never may sell or trade an item or items.

I offer this to help create a constructive perspective for those without one.

Cheers,

Jack

DS...Thank you for the compliment. I do like to make sure that everyone knows all that I know about an item that I am selling. This is a hobby for me and I can make as much income as I wish in the course of my job so I do not have to squeeze every dime that can be gotten from the sale of one of my cuffs. With that said, Can I interest you in a nice BMW with low miles and new brakes? The original owner used it only to go to church around the block every other Sunday.

Mr. Tanis. It is an honor to be corrected by you! It did not look right to me at first but my spell checker said it was ok. If I may, I would like to pose a question that you can relate to: In the movie Deliverance, the weird kid was playing the banjo and the song he played was Duelling Banjos even though the other string instrument he played against, was a guitar. If the guitar was replaced by a second banjo, would the song then become Dualing Banjos? Just had to ask.
Nice firearms web-site. I enjoyed looking at them.

Mark-Not to go back on my word, I live in the Detroit area. If it's not made in the USA I could have a problem. I suppose I could duct tape some fins on a BMW and get by. I better stick to US made cars and cuffs. This is a great hobby. Nice to know that some of the rarest items are available from time to time.

Dear Mark,

Believe it or else, I never saw Deliverance. I have some recollection of "Duelling Banjos", though. I surmise the song originally was written for two banjo players, dual banjoists, in which they musically duel with their instruments -- two banjos between them.

A guitar and a banjo playing against each other do not constitute duelling banjos or, for that matter, duelling guitars. They constitute duelling stringed instruments, though.

Horst Held has about the finest selection of antique firearms I ever have seen. On top of that, Horst is a very nice, honourable, decent man with a good sense of humour. His inventory, about which he is consummately knowledgeable, changes often, so you may want to bookmark his site.

Cheers,

Jack

Having to live on my credit card for the last week due to purchasing a large collection, I am well aware that none of the cuffs I have are in the same catagory as the wisner & hoyt. But if one fell into my lap I wouldn't mind paying a managable price for it, but there are a lot of cuffs and other items that i have to let go because I have to (try) to live within my means.
Congrats to the auction winner.
An armature from the motion picture Mighty Joe Young (1949) sold at auction for $105,000.00 - is there a handcuff that sold near that?

Hello.
Jack; personally, I still find this an interesting topic.
Mark, congrats on even owning TWO pair of the same incredibly rare handcuffs. Good for you for selling one, and sharing the chance to even own such a rare item. I look at it this way: I paid over $3500 for a Houdini book (NOT autographed) and some of the paper is so brittle it might break if I bent it. But, there are only two known copies to the best of my knowledge, that is, until a 3rd or 4th turn up. And my "means" to buy are certainly not plentiful, although when the very rare opportunity to add such a rare and important piece to a collection does come along, the serious collector "goes for it". And that goes for whatever you collect. Congrats to the buyer of the Wisner. I think the price was certainly fair compared to the number of these handcuffs in known collections.

It is pretty strange having two of these handcuffs at the same time. I remember seeing a picture of this cuff in the Wresh book and thinking that I will probably never actually get to see one let alone owning one. Never did I imagine that I would have that one to put in my collection. I am very honored to have been the next in line of owners of this special cuff. I hope that I will have it for a long long time, but I have to wonder who will be the next caretaker of it.

PS--Jack I think that by having these cuffs side by side constitutes them as "Dualing Wisners"

Dear Mark,

If you put them side by side, you will have dual Wisners.

If you take a pair and your wife takes a pair and you spar with each other, you will have duelling Wisners.

And now for some well-deserved deliverance!

John, I agree this topic is interesting. It is the used car vs. new television set vs. old handcuffs comparisons I find boring. They are invoked incessantly and miss the point. I might add -- I will add -- that cost is dictated very often, yet by no means always, by rarity, whilst personal preference or taste are not. The latter is subjective. Rarity is objective and not subject to interpretation. Whether an item is rare is a yes or no matter. What is beautiful, for instance, is subject to any degree of qualification and explanation.

I have found it useful over the years to invoke the criteria, the provisos, used in my message above, to clarify issues. Not that anyone really will care, but one of my favourite guitars and certainly the one I have had the longest is about the least expensive electric guitar Gibson ever made; my La Pegy are my favourite handcuffs.

In terms of restraints generally, my taste runs towards nippers. If I could have either a Blakely's Grip or a Bean Giant, but not both, I obviously would choose the Bean Giant. In the market, I could convert one Bean Giant into several Blakely's Grips with more than enough remaining to cover some hefty veterinary bills. My point is that the dollar value is determined exclusively by simple supply and demand. That is not the level playing field, the "all things being equal" arena, required for cultivating a meaningful perspective.

Cheers,

Jack

I'm not sure I understand your post. Do you think you received a fraudulent Second Chance Offer? Come to think of it, that's a natural avenue for the scammer, so thanks for the heads up.

If you believe it to be fraudulent, forward the message with full headers attached to spoof@ebay.com. If you're wrong it's a no harm no foul situation. If it is a scam, maybe they can catch the SOB.
