Hi,

I recently picked up a long chain Lilly Leg Iron and noticed that each clevis is a different size. All of the links look good and untouched so it is unlikely that someone fitted two different irons together to make one good one in case one side was damaged.
Has any one seen such a missmatch like this? Has any one even seen an extra long clevis on any Lilly?

Products of that vintage contained many, if not all, handmade parts. I suspect bits like the clevises, may have been hand forged. It was often cheaper to hand forge parts than to build the tooling to make them uniform. The smith worked to a pattern, but that's a part that is not critical to fit, so there's no reason to be overly careful to make both clevises the same, other than cosmetics.

It may be something as simple as the long clevis was the end of the bar, and the smith didn't bother to cut off the extra 1/2 inch length. It may have saved him a heat.

That's my semi educated guess, anyhoo.

how does one tell the difference between Lilly and Rovolier leg irons? I have examples of (what are supposed to be) both, but they look very similar.

Lilly takes a squared key pattern and Rivolier takes a round key.

thanks. I have one set with a chain style having a larger central ring, very like the Revoliers shown on your own website, but the key is square, so I guess they are Lilly.

I've never seen a Lillie with the central ring. Many of the French Rivolier style leg irons have the central ring. The Lillie tends to be heavier than the French Leg iron. A picture would help us identify what you have.

thanks for the help from everyone. I hope the image will appear with this message. These are what I am talking about. I was told these were Rivolier, and came from Randy Audas's collection. I certainly don't mind if they are Lilly, but it would be nice to know, if it's possible. The key bolt is square. I didn't get a key.

sorry everyone, about my misinformation. The irons in question are Rivoliers. I had them in storage, and my memory was wrong about the square key bolt. I pulled them out this evening, and they have a circular key bolt, just like modern Rivoliers do. If I can ever work out how to post photos, I'll do that later.
