Well, I can honestly say that I am glad I didn't have to miss two in a row! A great time was had by this southern gal! There was basically two parts I could have done without...first was the incident in the bar, second was that idiot in the purple dress performing that handcuff and mirror routine (although, everyone told her that she recovered nicely from the oops!). I'm not exactly sure what Cliff and Lars thought of me when, upon introductions, they stood up to shake my hand and I told them, "I don't do handshakes...I give hugs!" Then, of course, there was the hug I gave Stan in which he told me, "You're all sweaty!" No "Hi, how ya doing?" I got a "Gee, you're all sweaty!" Of course I was sweaty...I had just walked a couple of miles (both ways) in the California sun to get a stupid manicure to repair a nail I split on the plane! Of course, my attire for walking left a lot to be desired...long sleeved shirt and suede vest (oh, and let's not forget the Snoopy tie)!

The Thursday night get together at the restaurant was great. Anyone who missed it, missed a great time and good food! Out of everyone there, I think Elliot enjoyed his food the most!

Friday night...how to describe it! Let's just say I hope the funny farm wasn't missing any inmates! They would have blended in very well! As usual, Kristen did a WONDERFUL job with her Water Torture Cell. I wish I could do stuff like that!! Joseph Fox also did a great job as the "Escaped." I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing either of them perform! Cinema Night with Bill Shirk was also entertaining.

Saturday...it gets even better! I decided to enter the padlock picking contest and came in a very close second to Mark Lundblad in round 1. The handcuff picking contest (handcuff of choice was the S&W 104s) saw me only as an observer. I had expected Joseph Fox to win this one, but another Joe (Marotta) won that contest. It was brought up to me the fact of picking vs shimming with this contest...was it unfair to shim the cuffs? If Mark didn't state that one could not shim the handcuffs, then anything except using the key was fair game. The lectures were very informative, although I still haven't gotten the hang of bumping. I'll practice this weekend. Bill Shirk's lecture was also informative. I did notice that Saturday afternoon, there were a lot more attendees, mainly of the female persuasion, in attendance. Gee, you think that could have been because of Criss Angel? I wouldn't actually call what Criss Angel did a lecture or even an interview...it was more of a question and answer time. He also stuck around long enough for pictures and autographs. I got two autographs...one for the receptionist at my office, and another for the son of a co-worker (both were thrilled). The Saturday evening show was excellent, except for the lady performing with the handcuffs and mirror. I do know she's thankful she didn't have a hot mike! People may have heard her say things they didn't normally hear her say! I was backstage before Bill Shirk went onstage for his performance. I saw the problem with one of the boots, and Bill's decision to go ahead and perform with only one inversion boot...that's the mark of a true professional...dealing with the problem head-on and not letting it stop you! The show was great...I enjoyed it immensely! Of course, the after-party was good, too!

Sunday brought with it another contest...the "special escape" contest...handcuffs, padlock, blue box, and belly chain. Only with this contest, it was stated "NO SHIMMING OF HANDCUFFS" except for the youngest participant in the contest. Even though I knew I had not a chance in <dirty word> of picking open the 104s, I entered the contest anyway. Let it be known that I opened my padlock first! If I had only been that quick in opening it the day before! I knew that as long as Joseph Fox didn't have his padlock opened, I might get lucky and get my cuffs openend. Alas, it wasn't to be...Joseph got his lock opened, and soon thereafter, had his handcuffs opened. Upon winning the big prize, he made the announcement that he was donating half of his winnings to the Ronald McDonald House. Mark's lecture on Harry Cooke was a great way to end the convention. Shortly thereafter, I caught a ride to the airport, and headed back to reality!

I enjoyed seeing all of my old friends, and meeting a lot of new friends! At one point, Lars told me that he had heard a lot about me, and I told him not to believe a word of it! I recognized Cliff right away from a badge he wore that had his picture from The Magic Cafe on it. I looked at the badge, pointed, and said, "I know you!" I don't plan on missing another convention! I can't go through what I went through last year when I was unable to attend.

Okay, I have succeeded in wasting time at work until time to go home...the duck just quacked...it's 5:00 p.m....and I'm outta here! I may add more later!

Sweaty is doing fine, although she could use a day of nothing but sleep! I got back to work on Monday, and I got bombarded with work...pay applications, requests for information, architects supplemental instructions, problems with contractors, you name it! Nothing has gone right all week! Then, I find out you were giving away cd's of your collection, and I missed out! Oh well, I guess I'm not special!!

Okay, I've gotten several inquiries about the "incident in the bar." Let me go ahead and explain. This happened after The Escaped Artist, Joseph Fox gave his performance. Some of you may know that I was running back and forth quite a bit before Joseph performed. I think fewer of you know that almost a year ago, I was diagnosed with some minor heart problems (which puts me in a higher risk category due to family history). I carry around nitro tablets with me. A combination of things and events saw me having some chest pains that hit quite suddenly. Someone, I still don't know who, saw me to the bar so I could sit down. All I had to say was, "No" to the querry "Are you okay?" and people swarmed around me like buzzards to roadkill (okay, the redneck comes out in me at the most inopportune times). After a little bit, the pain went away, and I was fine. I would rather this incident not have happened, but it did. It was actually more embarrassing to me than anything. But, I do offer "thank you"s to everyone who was around to make sure I was okay. I was even given directions to the closest emergency room if it was needed in the middle of the night, and an offer to take me if need be.

So, now ya know what "the incident in the bar" was all about!

You can thank Cliff, who was right there, and Mark, who was Johnny on the spot with back up for any required trip. In a room full of people swilling alcohol, a few of us were clear headed enough to recognise what was going on.

It was wonderful that our convention was complete again this year. You gave the group a bit of class.

And I was very impressed with your lockpicking skills.

Margarette,

If it is any consolation to you, The brownies that you baked were awesome!
I didn't actually have any, but from the many little hands that I saw grabbing at them out of the bowl, they appeared to be a great success.
Hope that made your day!

mark
O--O

p.s. I am staring at a picture of you and viewing left and right of your convention badge. I still can not find your hometown, but am enjoying the view.

There are a lot of great reports of the convention so I am just going to add a few tidbits.
Great big thanks to Mark and Shiela Cannon - not since that one Minicon in the 90s have I been so overwhelmed by a convention.
My roomies Elliot and John, for card and coin tricks to the wee hours and then tolerating my French vaudeville act.
Russel Eaton, thanks for the loan of the jacket and the great conversations.
Ace Starry, for that great lunch and that cool book.
Jay Leslie, for reminding me that being a stooge can be hard work - can't wait to see that video.
I was taken by suprise by Chris Angel, who displayed a world view that impressed everyone who heard him speak. Definately going to take another look at his show now.
Everybody, please, do not let Kevin Ridgeway peek over your shoulder, it will only encourage his impish sense of humor.
Thomas Black for letting me in on the new directions Escape Masters is going.
The handcuff Cabal - Mark, Stan, Joe, Lars, Mark, and now Michael, someday, somehow, I'm going to find a cuff that none of you have.
Gordon Gluff couldn't be there, but was kind enough to send a copy of his Mattatuck handcuff research and my thanks to him.
That really nice lady from the hotel who brought us bottled water when we were moving the show material in from the trucks.
Cliff, I love that trading card!
It was a pleasure to meet the Great Weiss (George Heckert), who wrote articles for escapism back in the 80s.
Fred Pitella, I am so glad you were able to make it.
Pat Culliton wowed me with the history talks - both escapology and his own. Best tailgate party in years.
That Andrea, boyoboyoboy.
Other people have written about the performances and I think they put it best, so I just add my applause.
Everybody be there next year okay? Also Dean, Shawn, Ian, Mike and Mario, all of you I would love to see again as well, we missed having you.
