The Judds

Hi, I have read some interesting things about the Mattatuck Manufacturing Co. during the last week. <font color=red> (Thank you Gordon!) </font> and among my favorite tidbits is that Mattatuck is an Indian word for a Place of Many Trees.

I have been putting away some of my Judd cuffs and noticed some interesting things:

1. One pair of my Judds actually says "The Judd" on one side and the other pair does not have the Judd name at all. Both sides just say "Manufactured by the Mattatuck M'fg. Co. It could be possible that my cuffs got two rights or two lefts by mistake when it was manufactured. I wonder if any of you have noticed the same thing.

2. The clevis on each of my pairs is different. One is keyhole shaped and the other is tear drop shaped.

3. The Judd key bow is exactly the same shape and size of the Caveney Invention Cuff and the upper body have the same dimesions as well. The body and the bow on both keys are joined together exactly the same. Of course, the Judd key has a triangular shaped hole at the tip and the Caveney is threaded. I am guessing that Mattatuck made the keys for Caveney as the Maltby and Judd cuffs were made in 1904 and the Caveney came out in 1910. It might also be possible that neither company made the keys for their cuffs and was sub-contracted by a key company.

Regarding the markings of the name of the cuff, the Maltby and the
Judd generally have the markings on one cuff only. This is mentioned
in Tom Gross's book Manacles of the World.

Hi Mark

I have not seen a Judd "tear drop" clevis like the one you show on the left. I have two regular Judds and they both match the clevis you show on the right.
The "tear drop" clevis is similar to the ones used on the Mattatuck handcuffs.

Then there is the Department of Justice model that has a clevis and linkage that is similar to a Maltby. I think your Judd 3-way has a similar clevis.
