These are probably the heaviest and most durable toy handcuffs ever made in the US.
The rugged cast iron design and weight is why the seller thinks they are for actual duty use and not toys.
I believe these were made in the early 20's and are older than the similarly designed Gardner Screw Company's version that was patented in 1929 by its inventor, Thomas Hogland.
The are at least 2 versions of these cuffs that I know of. The Gardner toy cuffs have almost the same die cast shackle as these cuffs but their body is made from stamped metal plates and riveted together in much the same way. There are at least 5 different versions on the Gardner cuffs that I am aware of. Some have the Marx Toy Co. markings on them.
The most interesting thing that I found about the Gardner cuff is that in the original patent drawings, there is a small padlock (fig. 6) that was included that would allow the cuff to be secured by inserting it through the lock release. The kids playing with them could actually be locked up tight in these as the release would not be able to pushed down far enough to disengage the shackle.

Interesting note: Seller says "They lock securely into place and then open..but there is no key with these."
Hmmmm....just how exactly, then, can he call them military police cuffs? As Mark said, toys indeed.
