I have a set of Peerless Aluminum Handcuffs Patent 2,759,349 for sale. They appear to be in good condition they do show numerous surface scratches from years of use with no other engravings/stampings other then factory ones. These single & double lock correctly and take a regular key. My scale may not be the most accurate but I put these weighing in at about 4 ounces.

Your Peerless 4.0 ounce lightweights are MUCH harder to find than the S&W aluminums.

...they should do well on Ebay.

If I already didn't buy a Peerless alum. model from friend-collector, John Bushey...I'd buy yours.

Hi.

Has there been a model number assigned to these cuffs?
Do we know the dates in which these were produced?
Joe's photo file on this site show these as model 4 from 1956.

Peerless also produced another light model made of steel but was quite a bit thinner than the regular model. I believe it was 6 ounces.
Is the same information available on this model too?

Hi Mark,

I asked Mr. Gill at Peerless about these cuffs a few years ago. He told me that the aluminium handcuffs (4,5 oz) were manufactured between 1957 to 1961 and only 9200 were produced. As Joe states; they are much rarer than the S&W aluminium model 926.

The thin lightweight model (7 oz) was manufactured between 1962 to 1982, the number of manufactured units is unfortunately unknown.

I forgot that I had this announcement on the aluminum cuffs. Unfortunately, it does not have a date on it, but it does state, that it is "the greatest advance in handcuffs in 35 years". If they were established in 1914 and you add the 35, it would place this cuff at 1949. I believe that your dating is more accurate, but 1949 does come up by doing the math. No mention of a model number either.
They never mention aluminum by name. They just say it is made from corrosion-resistant alloy (as used in aircraft engine parts).
They also claim that the competition's lock was picked in 30 seconds but an impartial test lab gave up after 30 minutes of trying with these cuffs. (as if there was a big difference between the locking pawls)

It’s too bad that the P.H.C. discontinued the patented warded lock. Perhaps they received complaints due to key incompatibility: officers might have broken the flags on their keys while trying to unlock the new model cuffs. By contrast, S&W may have found the solution in their convex lock case design of the model 104, so as to prevent any ambiguity with the keys.

Perhaps, but the most common problem I have seen with junked 104's is the key bits broken off inside the mechanism.

I recall going to a police equip supply store in Toronto over 10 years ago and them showing me an entire box of 104's with keys broken inside that had been returned by Corrections Canada.

Fragile smaller key equals more breakage.

While we're on the subject of the Peerless-Aluminum Handcuff...Has anyone here ever SEEN or OWN the model with the INTERNAL WARD, that takes the DOUBLE-BITTED KEY? (See "Handcuff NotebooK"-Dick Norman) ...or have any Peerless advertising material relating specifically to THAT model-variation?

Usually my motto is - "If it's not in Stan's collection...then it doesn't exist? ...but I have no doubt these models were produced...I just have never seen one, nor know of a collector who owns one.

Are they out there?

Thanks for the info, Steve. I do own a set of 104s but haven’t actually put them to the test. About 2 years ago, I noticed that Zak Tools was making a carbon fiber 104 key, and wonder if the one-piece design would offer more resilience to breakage.

Hi,

I actually bought the box of junked cuffs from the police supply store and ended up tearing a few of them apart.

What I found was that the little "flag" on the bit of the key, not the entire bit, is what had broken off inside.

There are a few possbile scenarios on how this happened.

1) The officers unlocking the cuffs did not insert the key far enough into the keyway before turning it, or,

2) They turned with force in the wrong direction when the cuff was double locked.

I tend to favor the first scenario.

I've simply believe in getting the most for something I'm reselling....

When I have something really decent I like to offer it here first to logically save Fees! Who doesn't or wouldn't ? (sucking Up) Thanks Joe!

I wasn't off my mark by much (asked $285 here w/shipping and went to OBO) at an Ebay closing price of $260; and in thinking I should have waited a week to list the item because all the Newbies (Christmas time & got a new home computer) and "found" Ebay and the wonderful world of Handcuff collectibles and they would naturally drive up the price. Plus not thinking; I'm sure it's possible that some people who normally are big spenders in buying & bidding on Ebay handcuffs are not home but are away vacationing. The other downside is that it's the Holidays and the budget is spent.. (LILY IRONS!!)

But many will agree $260 is a fair price for this item. It would have been better $$ For me if the mad spenders on American Handcuffs & S&W Airweights realized that they aren't getting as good a value for their dollar for a rare collectible since this set is actually much rarer then the afore mentioned brands and maybe I should have waited to list these!

I honestly value this board for the insight, knowledge & tremedous coalition of Opinions that exist and make this collecting community Exciting!

Hi Joe, I have worked on one only pair of light weight cuffs with the warded pawl. The ward comes into play after the deadlock has been pressed. The lever is forced up at one end by the deadlock indent plunger ( within the cuff) and this moves the other end of the lever into position. The key requires the ward cut in the middle to bypass the lever and allow the deadlock to be disabled. The cuff I saw and handled is owned by an America collector.
(so there is at least one out there and the article was not fiction)

Well, Congratulations. If I had been able to bid in the last Min I would have been that ebay'er to have elevated up the price. I was the one that bid $200.01. But sadly I suffer from A.D. D. and in the last 30 min's of the auction a really cool show came on TV. Then with one min to spare I realized what I had done and ran to the computer, but I was too late. If I had seen them on here first I would have paid the man his asking price. And on Ebay I was all but willing to go as high as $400.00. In the last 4 years I have only seen one other pair for sell on ebay. And it was early in my addiction to collecting, so I did not see fit to pay the man the $300 that he was asking for his. Now I know about and want a pair of 4.5oz Peerless handcuffs. But if anyone was going to win over me, I'm glad to hear it was someone who would appreciate them as much as I would.
