Yes, and what happens if the arrestee manages to get his cuffed hand with the baton attatched free from the officers?

He can then swing his arm, baton and all, like a weapon.

Sure, the baton is a right angle now to his arm but it still can be swung and hurt if it makes contact.

It looks dubious to me. Not only is there the danger of the perp beating you with your own toy, training or not, it looks like it could result in broken arms. Not that I have much sympathy for perps, but it's gonna put some lawyer's kids through college. It looks like a lawsuit looking for a place to happen.

None of that detracts from its collector's interest, however, and may actually increase it.

I have never seen the curtis cuff. I don't think it was ever made. there is a baton in the New York City Police Museum that has cuffs as part of it, but they do not look very strong.

It kinda reminds me of a "Slave Catcher," versions of which I've seen in a variety of museums. The Sleve Catcher is a spring collar on a lance shaft. You catch the escapee by "spearing" him around the neck. I seem to remember one version with spikes on the inside. That would kinda inhibit someone's resisting.

I don't expect anyone will be marketing any of those, any time soon.

The baton cuff looks like it could theoretically be used the same way, although catching someone's wrist with a jab of a smallish fork looks like an exercise in futility.

I had this product on my arm when I saw it at cops west.my first thought was
if the perp. had it on his arm and pulled away he could strike the officer with
it. NO WAY!!! I tried,when that baton was hanging on my arm and I tried to swing it.
the leverage that was applied to my radial nerve(from the cuff)combined with my
momentum from the swing strike I was attempting VERY PAINFULL!!! I would'nt try
that twice. But what I did notice was,even with the takedowns it wont break your
wrist or arm.
Also it provides element of surprise,you cant see the cuff,untill you feel it on
your wrist. Its a awsome tool-state of the art.

This device is hardly state of the art. The same concept was tried back in the 80's with a device called the "Handler". It was very impressive in demonstrations with other cops, but when applied on the street, the techniques were too complex to be second nature unless practised constantly. It also depended on leverage and pain comliance to be effective, as does this tool, and as is well known, drunks, meth freaks, and crackheads tend not to care about the pain and gaining leverage without doing serious damage is highly unlikely.
This actually is probably a worse idea because the temptation to use the tool as sinmply a straight baton and start whaling away after the fancy move fails is present due to the design.
The Handler is a great collectible though. This probably will be someday also. It will go the way of the PR-24 and the flat sap. Great tools that just aren't accpeted anymore.
Why try to apply this thing and risk eating it when you can simply put the red dot of the taser on target and not break a sweat.

There is a new cuff in town...well sort of.
