If I read this right, The next time a set of highly desirable cuffs
comes up starting at $9.99 you will see who you are bidding
against until they reach the $200.00 mark. Then you will be a
number bidding against a number.

According to them this will combat problem of users receiving
spam, phishing and phony second chance emails.

Seems like a great way for eBay to make it easier for the sellers to use shill bidding, and impossible for bidders to find shill bidding.

It might work if you are into collecting thimbles or something. An opening bid could be 50 cents. I can't imagine a thimble hitting the $200 mark but it would protect bidders, I suppose.
A decent cuff starts at about $200.
If they are going to do this, they should take into consideration what things are worth.
Pens, toys, clothes, small car parts, and other such items would get the bidders name disclosed, while most jewelry, cars, houses, cameras, and stereos have the names blocked under this SMI if described correctly.
If true, buyers of big ticket items will be shilled and ripped off, while buyers of calendars, books and snow globes will get their stuff at an honest price.

I also sometimes like to know who I'm bidding against. I try not to bid against friends. But also, as a less knowledgeable collector, I also know that if someone like Stan is bidding high on an item then maybe it's worth more than I thought. But in the same token if I see a guys name who I know from the past will bid as high as he has to, to win something regardless what it is worth I know not to even try to compete.
I also like to do research and find out who I'm bidding against, by checking out there feedback from time to time. I don't like the new private bid idea.

HI !! collectors: i don't know what the big stink & fuss is about the SHILL bidders... you guys KNOW that you have been bidding against SHILL bidders for a long time, so what is the fuss about ???? you (we) still bid anyway, do we not !! as many of you know, as a seller, i HAVE to have RESERVES on most of my items or a would lose $$$$ big time on my items.... and why is that you say....you already know as i DO NOT use shill bidders.... MAYBE I SHOULD !!! because YOU collectors do not seem to help me..... if i have seen it once (and i have) i have seen it 100's & 100's of times where i put a NICE handcuff on EBAY complete with a WORKING key as does someone else ( but their SAME cuff is NOT as good condition & DOES NOT have a working key)the SAME day & by the end of BOTH auctions, there cuff sells for TWICE & THREE times what mine does !!!!! most of the time, my item does not even reach the reserve which is HALF of what the other persons cuff SOLD for..... so again, what is the fuss about.... rehash of OLD OLD news.... joe

both with buy it now / best offer and the others with
a respectable starting price and buy it now option.
just as your items with reserve, my items went nowhere.
