I deleted three or four anonymous messages from this thread early this morning. Yours may have been innocent, but the others were meant to cause trouble.

In general it is better for all if one supplies a name instead of defaulting to the anonymous posting. So please give your name, or a nickname which is also fine. But don't be anonymous and don't pretend to be someone else.

It is also good to give an email address. You may not want to use your regular email address here. I understand that, but free email accounts are available from many different sources. Establish an account just for use here and everyone will be happy.

I do not mean to offend anyone. I am just trying to keep the discussion here on track.

As I am well-known worldwide (not in the EA biz) and don't need the public attention, curiosity, and goofy speculation that would come from my posting here, I'll use a nickname from now on (thinking of one). I didn't think being "anonymous" mattered so much as post content. Posting an email address? I'm just not comfortable with that. Is that OK?

As an old Online Warrior, I'll second that. IMX, even an alias that everyone knows is an alias adds considerable credibility to one's posts. It allows you to build up a presence. Anon doesn't.

One of my pet beefs on this board, is that it even allows you to pick a session name. Most boards I'm familiar with, show your User ID as a sign on name. That's almost always a nick anyway, but it would prevent me from logging on and claiming to be Joe.

When I first started posting here I realised that my posts were coming up as "anonymous" and that was purely because I hadn't understood properly how the site works - getting the hang of it now!
I reckon that some of the "anonymous" posts are innocent and legitimate, but I do have my doubts about others.
I agree that to attain and maintain one's credibility here, it's essential to register a screenname/nickname. It's a pity that posting can't (presumably) be restricted to members only. Would that be possible? Then there's a reasonable chance of eliminating the mindless idiots who occasionally spring up here.

Actually the software allows restricted posting. And there have been occasions when I was ready to require it. But it would come at a great price. First time users and visitors often bring the most interesting information and questions to the forum. Requiring registration would shut most of them out and I would rather not do that.

We actually have very few problems. And I hope it stays that way.

Advocates of registration might want to visit Physics Forums, at http://www.physicsforums.com/. All the advantages of registration are evident. So are the disadvantages, and Physics Forums has a zero tolerance policy for abuse.

Handcuffs are not string theory, quantum mechanics or nuclear engineering, though...although chain nippers come close.

This forum, if nothing else except a measure of conscious determination, can raise one's level of frustration tolerance -- a collateral contribution of cretins and chaos.
