scalemead cuffs

hi

I've obtained a pair of scalemead handcuffs
in the book of alex r nichols page 208 can you see a pic of it
I've got the same cuffs on the back of each cuff stand japan
the firm scalemead is english
can some tell me more about this cuffs
the cuff is very well made

any info is welcome

Hi Patrick,

Scalemead was a British company however they were not a manufacture but simply marketed a brand of cuffs which I believe were made in the far east.

Scalemead was primarily a mail order company selling airguns, blank firing handguns, knives crossbows etc. I believe they may have had one or two "show rooms" but they bulk of their business was mail order.

They appeared in the early to mid 1980's shortly after a firm of Sussex Armoury went out of business. I've always assumed that it was simply a change in name only as the product lines were very similar. ( I bought my very first pair of cuffs from Sussex Armoury when I was a young child).

Scalemead seems to have fallen by the wayside and a firm called Battle Order (also based in Sussex) now sells very similar items. http://www.battleorders.co.uk/index.html

hi

that make sense to me while the compagnie is from the uk and the cuffs from japan
but do you know how many different cuffs they marked like this or only this kind of cuff
and are there more collectors who got one pair of scalemead handcuffs

Hi as far as I'm aware they supplied only the one model of cuff. A pair appeared on eBay recently however the Scalemead name appeared badly worn almost as if it was some form of transfer. If Scalemead was a re-incarnation of Sussex Armoury, then Sussex used to sell one model of Alcyon cuffs however these were not branded with their name only the Alcyon name appeared.

This is the "Scalemead Security" cuff in my collection (picture from my CD). The name is silk screened on and wears off easily. The cuff is made in Japan and has 3 links.

I 've got the cuffs from ebay
stan my cuff is exact the same like yours
only the markings are not as clear as yours

in the book of alex there is almost no info from thiscuff or compagnie
so that's why I ask it over here

the info you give me is more than I know about it

I used to work for scalemead, this type of item were bulk bought in the far east for pennies, and incredibly marked up for lots of gullible people over here. They moved from thier head office in Forest Row in the '90s and bought Webly air rifles.... don't know any more now.

hi patrick, i have owned many pairs of this cuff, the company was based in forest row sussex, they had a fire there in the mid eighties,before they moved to new premises down the road, still in forest row,i aquired a quantity of these cuffs as fire damaged, (boxes only)!. they were a very cheaply made cuff in my opinion, one cheek plate and lock case being cast as one piece, study yours carefully, youll only see one joint around the lock case, the rivets were also cast into this cheekplate/lockcase casting,hammered over then polished,thats why they are not "handed" ie keyholes on same side, one casting does it all. the unlocking pawl can also be seen through the keyhole, in an ASP style!, cheap and nasty, and very easy to open, the name was printed on the cuffs over a laquer finnish, they were very shiny. i sold all mine years ago, should have kept a pair though in hindsight!.

the cuffs are in my opinion well made beter then all the other crab
what's go arround
but they are not the best cuffs ever made that's for sure
I've got my cuff within a trade so I didn't lost money on it

Hi Guys, I used to live not far from Scalemead ( still do really ) although Scalemead have been gone some years. As far as i'm aware they were an individual company and not linked to any other businesses.
I have a blank firing replica of a colt 45 bought from scalemead which i'm selling.

i have a pair that looks like stan's photo above except keyhole is centered and sideways to his,also only two links, only markings is japen stamped on only one of the links,shape of cuffs and swivels look the same ,i don't know if they are scalemead or what make any ideas

I have a 13 oz bowie knife that I use in the kitchen which is marked Scalemead stainless steel. There are no other markings though. The quality of the steel is very good as far as stainless steel goes. Same company??
