Hiatt version of the American Tower handcuff

I just acquired a Hiatt model 121, which is their version of the Amercian Tower handcuff. As can be seen from picture, the cuff is slightly smaller than the original. The key is similar to the original, except the bit has slightly smaller.

Hiatt also made a cruder version of this cuff, one often called the "Nigerian" pattern. I don't have one to compare. Can someone post a picture for comparison?

I have a couple of questions:

Are there any other versions of Hiatt Tower cuffs?
Why is the "Nigerian" model called the Nigerian Model?

Gordon Gluff just sent me pictures of his Hiatt Nigerian cuff and as a bonus a picture of a Hiatt version of the Tower Leg iron.

Joe and Gordon,
This is an interesting thread. I had no idea that Hiatt even produced a Tower copy. I recall seeing a line drawing in "Houdini on Magic" of a "Nigerian" model. I had always assumed that this was a mistake on the editor's part, as the cuff clearly looked like a Tower. Thanks for clearing up my confusion.
Question: is the Bean Hiatt also slightly diffent in terms of size etc., or is it the case that the cuff was imported from the US and then stamped Hiatt?

Hi Paul

There are also two versions of the Bean Patrolman. (At least two.)

I have one that is quite similar to a light weight Bean, but it is slightly different and I would say of somewhat lesser quality than an original Bean. So I think it was made by Hiatt.

There is a second version that lacks the normal locking button. Stan Willis has one of these pictured on his CD.

Hi Joe L. In the above responce, you said that you know of 2 models of the Tower Bean Handcuff made or sold by Hiatt. I was not aware of the existance of either model. I wonder if you may have been refering to Hiatt Bean Police or Patrol. I know that there was both arming button and non-arming button versions of the cuffs with the name Hiatt on them. I am of the belief that Hiatt manufactured these cuffs in the U.K. by license from Bean.



I have never seen or heard of a Tower Bean cuff made or sold by Hiatt.
