I recently bought a pair of Kyoung Chang handcuffs and am having trouble figuring out what model they are. I haven't found much in the way of description online, and have relied mostly on the Cuffsland site.

They look aluminum and I think they have cast bows, but they feel about the same weight as my S&W 100s. They're marked KCH-010 and KNP-01-0001. They have the triple ratchets and triple-bit key, which makes me think they're the high security (701, 703, 705) type. But they don't have the markings of the Cuffsland examples.

Do the 101s have single ratchets or triple? Can any one help??

Thanks,

Paul

Dear Paul,

the KCH-010's also have the the triple rachets. But these rachets are not separated by thin metal plates as on the "high security" models 701(aluminium bodied), 703(nickel plated), 705(stainless).

If your handcuffs have been delivered with the triple-bit key they should be out of this high security range. You may see the seperating plates between the rachets when the cuff is openend.

Actually, the normal KCH-010 model (or KCH-011 if aluminium bodied) with triple-rachets can be openend with an standard key. But this is not recommend, because the singel-bit Kyoung Chang key is slightly wider, and a standard key can by trapped behind the double-lock if turned in the wrong direction.

Sorry, I forgot to mention:

The high security models have also the following differences:

-- the bow is thicker ( approx. 5 mm / 0.197 inch compared to 4 mm / 0.157 inch at the KCH-010)
(this can explain the high weight even of the aluminum model)

-- there are two additional grooves milled into the bow (crossing the teeth, making way for the separating plates)

The sideplates are (imho) identical, so there may by a KCH-010 stamping even on the 701 model....

Roman,

Thanks very much for your responses. My pair has the two thin plates, and the bow has two grooves along its length. The more I handle them the more I think they're aluminum with steel innards, 701s, I guess. The action is certainly smooth.

Interestingly, I just found that a regular(S&W) key will undo the double lock, although it won't unlock the cuffs. I doubt this is a "feature" since a suspect with a regular key or a pick could make them single locked and thus susceptible to abuse complaints.

Best,

Paul

Hi Paul,

yes, the keyway to the double lock is not blocked by the separating plates.

But please take care. When the double lock is already openend, the key may snatch behind the slider. By turning back it will activate the double lock and is trapped behind !!!

You can see a picture of the situation (with a KCH-010) right here (sorry, in german):

Hello all,
Having had quite a bit of experience with these cuffs, please use the factory key that came with the cuffs. I have had to deal with a number of people using the standard keys to unlock them and screwing them up. The bit is just a tiny bit shorter than the factory key and there are alot of people out there that force things. Now I can open them with standard keys but I don't turn it all the way. Just enough to release the bows. I have had to deal with these locks jammed while on people and it is not fun. But that is another discussion on how to undo the locks in those situations.

Once, I have also blocked a standard key in the hole with the double lock activated. But I have succeeded to retrieve my key by pulling "externally" the double lock. One can insert a small pin (insect pin) in the slot, "grasp" the small part of the double lock that always visible, even activated, and pull it. With these very smooth cuff it's easy. And it has worked.
Spare keys should have easier to find.
