Thompson handcuffs..found some info but need more

I did find this info that I emailed about.Hiatt Co. from England DID merge with the Thompson Company i the US. But I can't fine any history on the Thompson Company. Can anybody help? THANKS!!!!

This intimated that a certain Mr. Hiat was a maker of Prisoners'' Handcuffs, Felons'' Leg Irons and Gang Chains to the Trade. <p/>

Sorry, but the current Hiatt-Thompson has nothing to do with the handcuff company that John Thompson founded in 19th century Birmingham. It is just a coincidence of names.

"Thompson Plug chain handcuffs. Made by the U.S. handcuff maker Thompson during the Civil War period. Not many examples now survive. This rare handcuff predates such patented U.S. cuffs such as Rankin and Kimball, and was the first handcuff to be mass produced in America. Cuffs are stamped "THOMPSON" and "HARD".

TOO BAD they are not plug chain cuffs as advertised, but just plain old darby cuffs.

I presently have the Thompson plug handcuffs shown on the Yossie website. They look like the same ones shown on page 15 of "Devices of Human Restraint" by Steve Santini. They are in very nice condition, and are stamped "Thompson" and "Hard". There is also a stamp like two parentheses "()". The key has a "T" stamped on one side and "7" on the other side. Thompson is mentioned on page 47 of "Manacles of the World" by T L Gross as being a US manufacturer of about the Civil War, copying British styles of the time, and I believe that the plug-lock is an older British style. In these days of cheap copies, there is always the worry that any item is a fake, but I have no doubt personally that these are originals.

Thompson cuffs have often been considered to have been manufactured here, but that is not true. Thompson cuffs were made in Birmingham, England. Birmingham was the host of most of the English companies, including Griffin, Hiatt, Nichols, Froggatt, Longmore, and Dowler.

The Thompson company was founded in about 1845 by John Thompson. The company appears in Birmingham city directories for the rest of the 19th century. Thompson cuffs are relatively common in the US and I believe this may be evidence that they did a lot of export business, perhaps during the US civil war.
