That's a fairly standard eBay scam. There are a couple of techniques that can help with these.

NEVER respond to an eBay e-mail that shows up in your e-mail. Go to your eBay messages. If the message is legit, then reply from there. In particular NEVER click a button in an e-mail supposedly from eBay. That can send you directly to a password phishing site. Even if you don't enter your account details, it can open your computer to the insertion of malicious software.

If you get a Second Chance Offer, or something similar, ask for confirmation through eBay's e-mail system, possibly using the "Ask Seller a Question" feature on the original auction listing.


But be careful. There are some indications, vigorously denied by eBay, that their internal system has been hacked.
