Greetings to All civilized here,
If there are any collectors here that happen to have photos of a "Leg Pick" restraint and would care to share them I would much appreciate it.

I have'nt any photos of the mentioned. I have only discovered a drawing in a book at the Library. It looks very similar to the head of a Pick Axe with an enlarged middle. Large enough to fit just above the ankle as a ball and chain would. To inhibit movement obviously. Looks as it may be from Civil War / Slave Era. I am familiar with similar looking devices used during American Slavery but worn on the neck. The prisoner in the drawing had one on each leg and it was titled LEG PICKS.
Hope someone somewhere out there may have more Info.

A clog shackle made by a number of makers including Union Hardware Co.

Stan may have a pic of one he can send you or post.

Crude hand forged examples also exist.

This one is from a prison work gang in Northern Florida. It was made in the prison and was rivited on.

Hey Thanks guys!
I have to mention that the book stated that they would place burlap between the shackle and the leg to prevent chafing. Burlap?!!! Why Yes, what a comfortable soft material choice that was! Sheeeesh.

OK, I've seen pictures of those, but never heard the name. The device allows walking with minimal difficulty, but if you try to run. They tend to tangle with your legs and trip you.

I've not heard them referred to before as leg picks. Catalogs show them as Spike Clog Shackles.

The padlocking model as pictured above in Yossi's webpage, is also known as the "Arkansas Toothpick".
I have been asked about the accuracy of the name before but I know that I have seen these described or being sold with that moniker several times by different people in different places.
Anyone else heard of this?

I've not heard "Arkansas Toothpick" with reference to restraints, but it is a recognized term of Civil War vintage for a large double edged dagger.

should anyone be interested, i have for SALE a CLOG spike shackle like the one shown in YOSSIES collection.... it is housed in a nice old wood case (suitcase type ) & it belonged to the great DICK NORMAN... it has a post card inset in the case from MR. NORMAN...... joe

In Gary Brown's book, "Texas Gulag" he makes mention of the clog shackle which he refers to as the "spur".
