Hello fellow collectors,

recently I got this cuff, which looks like an early "Otto Schlüter" or maybe even a prototype. It has no markings (except for "POLIZEI" = "police") and some of the cuts (and the key-holes, too) are really roughly made. Have you ever seen something like that?

Best regards,
Guenter

PS: the keys are not original.

Atame, these look homemade to me. It looks like someone used a Lips cuff as a model to make their own brand of "police" handcuffs. Just my opinion.

Hi,

I have no idea who was the manufacturer. But one thing I am sure - these are not home made.
First of all let´s have a look at the shape of the frame - it is casted of alloy - it was necessary to have some form for casting. In addition nobody would be able to cast aluminum at home. Also rotating arms and notches are nicely made - this was professionaly made.
I am not sure about keyholes - these cuffs may be repaired or remade or changed formerly, but not homemade - definitelly not.

Cheers

They look to be early East German design, maybe this was something developed during the war? I see elements of similarity between the styles, and think this is what the East German ones we know today as and this was the predecessor to them.

Hello everyone,

thank you very much for the replies.

This is most probably not a homemade piece. It is very similar (shape, size) to this German model.

And it pretty looks like Michael's Otto Schlüter.

Josef,

I agree they are probably not home made, but casting aluminum at home is very much a possibility. There is quite an active hobby casting community in the US. Some even cast iron using medeival technology.

But these may be prototypes, or something run off in a small shop.

I suppose casting aluminium at home would be pretty much impossible - it's much easiear to cast iron, even tough it needs greater temperature, than aluminium - casting this metal requires oxygen-free environment, so you would need special equipment - if you heat aluminium to its melt point it'll of course melt but also it'll oxidize giving a cast that will be mainly aluminium oxide - a brittle material that has terrible mechanical strength.

Not true, there is slag that forms on top of the crucible when heating but when the ladle is dipped or the crucible poured the slag is off to the side and the molten metal is poured right in with no problems. I used to do Aluminum casting in junior high school alot. We used sand casting for the molds which accounts for the crudeness of the finish. Alot depends on how good your mold is and what type of sand as in water and how much water or oil and sand mixture.

These could have been made from a piece of already cast aluminum that was cast for something else (like a mounting plate or something). Or they could have been cast "at home".....I know a metal worker here in the states who casts aluminum at home (on a small scale); he makes props for Steve Santini. I also know a lot of people who cast brass at home.......these are metals with low melting temps. and for Houdini's sake, it is not rocket science! LOL! But just to satisfy all of you nay-sayers......they are proto types or whatever you want them to be.....but they are not homemade.

I'd be very surprised if they turned out to be home made. Not many of us nuts out there, and fewer who have foundries.

I read somewhere about cuffs made under the Nazis that used pretty crude aluminum castings. They were said to have been made in The Camps, but I don't kbow about the veracity of the story. The fit and finish on the subject cuffs would certainly jive with that source.
