Bean-Cobb handcuffs

Recently I bought an interesting Bean-Cobb handcuff. I have tried to put together a gallery of the various versions that I have seen. I have put them into the order that I think is correct, but I am not sure if I have it correct.

The very earliest model has no recess around the locking button. The lock is also a bit wider than the housing. This is easy to see in the third version picture shown below. The early versions also lack the manufacturers numbers on the hinge.

I certainly have the fourth and common version.
Steve Santini mentioned in another post that the H&R models use a flat as opposed to fluted keyway.

Patrick Pull The Cuffs open i have numbers but they are visible. but you need the cuff to be open mine are on the inside part of the cuff.

I though it was a little damaged inside of the hinge
but now I understand that these where stampings of a serial number
sorry I can't read these anymore
but hey they are old and I like them

i just got a set of Bean Cobbs one side has the recessed button and the other side does not have a recessed button but has the button to push down to activate it. any idea what version this might be.

i have some of the version's above but the best one is like stan's h&r model but leg irons,it has h&r logo on back of both and MADE IN USA on front below button & keyhole on one side only, it has 20 links

I have 3 sets of the fourth version. One set is marked on the chain link "J.STOUGH" at the top and "4.WARD" at the bottom of one side, with "JEANETTE" at the top and "PA" at the bottom of the other side. I haven't been able to find out anything on the markings though. Anyone here know?

Don

I sounds to me that one of the locks on your cuffs has been interchanged with another pair. It would be very easy to do that. They are designed so the locks can be removed and cleaned. It would be very easy to move a lock from one to another.

it seems that there is another variation:
My pair of Bean-Cobb handcuffs does have no recess around the locking button and a straight patent date. The lock is slightly larger than the housing, too. I coulndn't find any manufacturers numbers at hinge or inside the
cuffs.

Does anyone have a pair of Non-recessed leg irons with circular (crescent) patent dates?
I realize that one could "build" a pair very easily.
I assume that the factory was making cuffs and leg irons at the same time.

This is the box that came with a set of cuff that has the recess and the date stamped in two lines: PAT MAY 2 over 1899.

Maybe the "Improved Bean Pattern" refers to the Tower Bean cuff and not an improvement of the Bean Cobb cuff itself.

Hi all,

At least as far as the design similarities go, it just struck me that the "heavyweight" version from H&R seems to have the same swivels as well as the two connecting chain links that was used on the Bean's LIs. (The lock centers are the non-recessed type, unlike the LIs, however). It's like the chicken & egg dillema...

On a side note, Has anyone ever tried to personally interchange lock centers from a 'flush' fitting to a 'non-flush' model or viceversa, I mean to see if it's physically (easily) interchangeable? Just curious...

This Bean-Cobb combination is not even available in the States.
Ebay had it roots in such items and was delighted to find them while searching for Bean Cobb cuffs.

I have "Surfed" several different forums, and don't understand why people look at a simple, harmless posting and make a negative comment.

I have a set of Model 4 - until now I had no clue there were so many. But when were they made? I know the Pat date is 1899 however I assume thats not the actual production date. Thanks
