Smith & Wesson 104 Cuffs

Found old (?) pair of S & W handcuffs among items in old tool box at garage sale that I think are Model 104 "high security. Any one know when they may have been manufactured/used? Serial number is 710122.

from what i know they are still current. they can be bought for under $50.00 New.

Yep they're curent manufacture. They're listed on the S&W website at US$53.95 (or $54.95 for the push-button model). I bought a pair earlier this month when I was in Georgia. As with other S&W cuffs, most suppliers will discount the price - even for one pair. I think I paid just under 50 bucks including tax, although some web sites offer them for less than that.

BTW, the 104's are currently used in Starke "Florida State Prison" Death Row Unit and probably in many more facilities as well. Here is a picture of convicted serial killer, Aileen Wuornos while at Starke, just before her execution in 2004. Look close, the cuffs are S&W model 104's (I have a good close-up of this picture in my DVD collection).

Yep, by the time you've added the shipping charge it brings the price to around the over-the-counter price I paid - after negotiating a discount!

Unlike Peerless, Smith & Wesson doesn’t use sequential serial numbers. I’ve even heard of collectors with the same serial number on cuffs that were made several years apart.

The 10x series dates back to the early 1980’s. You may obtain a range of dates by looking at the address on the stamping. Are they marked “Springfield, Mass” or “Houlton, ME”? Do they have a slot on the upper edge to engage the double-lock, or do they use the more traditional pushpin double-lock?

Thanks for all your help, the cuffs are stamped "Springfield Mass" and have the slot type double lock access. Just wanted to see if they were worth buffing up and lubing back to function as a gift for my brother when he comes up for a visit..he's a police officer with 27 years "on the job"in Florida. His agency uses Peerless hinged cuffs, but he remembers using the 104's in the late 70's and early 80's when he was a municipal police sergeant...

Didn't they have the 94's back then. meaning in the late 70's/early 80's.

I believe that S&W manufactured the 9x series until the beginning of 81. My 104s have the Houlton, ME stamp, as they were made only a few years ago. Funny how I wasn’t in the market for a contemporary pair of cuffs, but found myself on the checkout of a police shop e-tailer where I was buying two no longer made S&W Galaxy flashlights, saw the 104s also on sale for only $30 and added them to my order.

The humidity down in Florida can really take its toll on the cuffs. Some of my friends from the NYPD moved to northern Florida, and after about a year their model 90s actually turned black! In any case, I’m sure that your brother will appreciate the 104s. They are an excellent choice in modern linked cuffs.
