Yes without a doubt it is a record (not sure whether Guinness World Records will record it so sorry Joe both Stan and I can not welcome you into our exclusive club).
Must admit I felt a little guilty bidding against you when my bid of £180- was not accepted! However, you do have an exceptionally rare item on its way to you - I do not know of any other Darby Griffin & Nichols darby cuffs with original key and in such good condition.
The final price certainly exceeds the $2000- I paid for the Hiatt Darby Leg-Irons with the Moorhouse Street markings.

Yes the price is a bit high, but of course I did not determine the price. Bidder #2 determined the price.

Why pay so much? It is very unlikely that I will ever seen another one and if I can ever claim to have a speciality, then this is it.

To put some perspective on it, do a search of postage stamps and you will find single stamps with starting bids higher than this closing price. And this cuff is older than any postage stamp.

I'm sorry to report that two years ago over $17,000 was paid
for a Forgatt darby handcuff by a bidder at Mastronet Auction.
They were advertised as Houdini's, with providence, from Mario
Carrandi. WE all know this adds a lot to the value, but still,

Hi,
I remember item # 18 at the Houdini-Radner auction. It was a broken Darby and it took in $2,400.00.
It has the certificate of authenticity with it, but I would take Joe's new cuff over it any day.
