By alerting prospective bidders, especially bidders who have not found the auction yet, in advance. Additionally, a disincentive to entice a seller into a direct sale is created whenever something, like an auction, is put under scrutiny, such as posting it here. That is how.

The "buy it now" price was 600 EUR which migth be allright for a working pair of Lyon Presto handcuffs, but I decided to bid just 1 EUR in my first bid in order to override the "buy it now" option.
I'm precautious because of the strange things that happended last week in the auction with exactly the same pair of handcuffs: The auction ended with a highest bidding amount of 591 EUR. A few hours after the auction ended I received an eMail from the seller with a "second chance offer" that offered me to buy the handcuffs for my former bidding amount of 222 EUR which sounded really great to me. However, a few more hours after that I received an eMail from the French eBay Security Center that warned me not send any funds because the seller's eBay account has been hacked...
That's why I decided to keep patient and wait until the seller sends me some detailed pictures of his handcuffs.

In fact this sale has been canceled by eBay. I have received a mail from eBay after my bid. eBay requested me not to contact the seller du to a problem with the identity

I was the original highest bidder when the above cuffs were on ebay (591 euros). Normally I send the money by PayPal within a few hours of the auction ending, however, we were away for a couple of days and on returning I had the email from ebay saying the item had been withdrawn due to the sellers account and problems with a 3rd party using his name. Furthermore they said do not send any money as PayPal would not offer any guarantees. If I had sent money please notify PayPal or Western Union immediately.
I did correspond with the seller directly and he assured me his account was now sorted out and I could still pay using PayPal simply by not mentionning the ebay transaction number.
I offered the seller two options - either send the handcuffs Cash on Delivery or send them to me and I would pay immediately they arrive by PayPal. I pointed out that I have 100% positive feedback and he could trust me.
Next thing I know he has re-advertised them on ebay, don't think I will bid on them this time - if I was the seller I would be happy to send them knowing that 606 euros would be credited as soon as they arrived. I am sure many of us have had problems with PayPal I remember selling a special Pin Tumbler Lock decoder to a Locksmith in the USA, he paid by PayPal and after 5 days contacted them to say nothing had arrived. PayPal immediatly took the money back from me and it took nearly a month for them to re-pay me after the items arrived in the USA and the buyer notified them. On the other hand their secure site is excellant - they refused a transaction simply because my new bank card had a different Issue Number.
