McKenzie Mitts – a rare sight

I visited my big buddy Chris Gower yesterday and we took some photographs and thought we’d like to share something with you – a pic of us each in a set of McKenzie Mitts. The Mitts themselves are rare of course, but to have 2 sets in use at the same time is – well – even rarer!
As you might imagine, operating a camera when you're wearing steel mitts is virtually impossible. So, we called upon the services of Chris's wife - an award-winning amateur photographer. Unfortunately she was already late for an appointment and had about 30 seconds in which to take the photo, we'll try to do better next time (but I'm responsible for chopping off the heads).
BTW for those of you who don’t know us, Chris is on the left of the pic and I’m the good-looking guy on the right!

Good to see you Mike yesterday, as you say it was a pity we did not have a bit more time for Jenny to take some more photos.
What we did find interesting is that Mike wore the Mitts (black finish) for about 10 minutes, the weather over here was reasonable about 20 degrees and after removing them the internal surface was very wet due to sweat. Clearly if they were ever actually used on a long transportation journey then they would be soaking wet from the prisonner. May be this is why out of the 26 known pairs many are in very poor condition - think Stan called them 'Rust buckets'.
Moral to learn, dry them after use and spray the internal surface with WD40 to preserve them.

Heh Chris, I've often been described as 'hot stuff' - but did you have to tell everybody here!
Seriously, we've identified yet another practical problem with the Mitts, but I consider myself very privileged to have had the opportunity to wear them.
In fact we took a series of pics - when you were free and able to operate the camera! - showing me in the black Mitts with more detail. I'll happily post them here if people are interested.

Matthew - you'd be very welcome. I'd provide the beer, but I promise you it'd be the most difficult pint you've ever drunk!

Stan - Chris purchased the back Mitts on behalf of somebody else and is currently holding them until they're collected from him. I'm grateful to Chris for letting me see them before he has to pass them on. Jenny took that one pic of us, we have plenty more pics (taken by Chris, of course) of me wearing them.

While we on the subject of mitts, my thanks to marc Lyons for bringing a pair to the last escape convention so I could examine them. They are not something you get to see every day!

I have a video i did last month with a pair of Mitts, dont like it much so will redo it next time i shoot
