Picked up a pair of cuffs in Tallinn. Said by 2 independent dealers to be KGB and/or Estonia prison cuffs from 50's or 60's. Both dealers remarked that "unmarked" cuffs of this particular kind meant they were KGB. Dingy and sharp-edged w/ odd side entry barrel/screw key, but they work fine.

Maybe I can post a pic when I get photobucket up and running.

Oh.

So let me get this right.

The old Soviet secret police (KGB) wanted to remain secret, so they never marked anything, to stay secret. So anything not marked must have been KGB property. That's why it's not marked. To stay secret, and therefore that proves it was KGB property, since it's not marked.

Monica, darling, if anyone believes that line of b*llsh*t, then they'll be first in line to buy something marked "KBG".

I trust you will not, however. I don't know how to write cyrllic in HTML format, but, as I hope your realize, in the Russian alphabet, KBG ain't spelled KBG.

Ummm, whatever. Just passing on some info and not baiting the hook for a sale. The 2nd independent dealer (another store), upon inspection of the cuffs, made the same comment regarding origins. They had no vested interest in a sale or misinformation and no high-minded pretensions. Whether or not the stated history of the cuffs is true, I don't know, but I was just passing on the story to forumites who may have an interest and I certainly trust the "man on the ground" in Estonia over some ranting internet dweeb who thinks he's got it all figured out, to put it politely.

Yes, Stan, I know, will get to it, but I'm frantically packing up for another trip and it might have to wait until I get back on Wed.

I have searched about 15 cuff collections on the web (all the obvious ones from our friends here) and haven't seen anything very close to what I purchased in Estonia. The closest I've seen was a "Russian Bottom Key" at this site:

Well, Monica, I don’t know what type of cuffs the former KGB used, but I would bet my bottom ruble that they were of Russian or at least Soviet manufacture. I do, however, possess non-restraint items that were certainly used by KGB agents. What I have learned about them – through a Russian speaking emigrant – is that they are marked with the factory of manufacture, any relevant usage information and the factory inspector’s ID number, but there is absolutely no reference to the KGB or any other agency that may have used them. Should they have failed to perform satisfactorily in the field due to a quality control issue, you can be sure that the factory inspector responsible would receive a most unpleasant visit.

Pretty much all of the Russian cuffs that I have seen had sharp edges. I guess that you can’t sue for nerve damage over there.

Monica,
I am in suspense!
I would really like to see a picture of your cuffs.
Last year, I wrote an article about Russian cuffs and there are more than a dozen pictures in it.
I wonder if any of those are the same as what you recently bought. If not, can we see it? I would post it here for you if you want to send it to me if you have trouble with photobucket. Or you can email it privately.
Either way, I would really like to see it.
Thanks

Mark

Thanks for the help guys. Mark, I will get the pic up on the forum or send one for you to host - I promise. I am at the beach now and the pic is on a computer at home. Give me until mid next week when I return home.

I don't know what kinds cuffs these are, but not ones I've ever seen before. It would make sense that they are Russian/Estonian as the Soviet Union controlled Estonia for all but 4 years between 1940 and 1991.

Dear Franklin,

There is no special HTML format for the Cyrillic alphabet. There is the alphabet itself, like the English alphabet. Cyrillic is supported by Unicode (UTF-8), which the Forum is not.

Here is a JPEG image of some of what you might want to see.

Cheers,

Jack

Hi Jack:

I was not aware of that.

Thank you.
