A couple of weeks ago, I hired a friend of mine to do some "kid"sitting for me. (My ten year old informed me that he's not a baby, so no one "baby" sits him, they "kid"sit him. Anyway, this is the same son who yelled down the hall for the key to the handcuffs.) Well, my friend is a fellow magician who knows I do escapes and knows that I have a very small collection of handcuffs. I was recently given some S&W 104's and had them out learning about them. I left them on the kitchen table. Can you imagine what happened next? My friend was messing around with the handcuffs and one of his kids locked them on him. One thing you need to realize about me is that I normally don't keep the handcuff keys attached to the handcuffs, so the keys to these cuffs weren't with the cuffs. I had about ten standard handcuff keys in a zip-loc bag on the computer table. My friend found out very quickly that the standard handcuff key won't work with the 104's! I almost got a call at work from him telling me that his kids locked him in the handcuffs and he couldn't get out. Fortunately, he tried one last key that was also on the computer table....the correct key that opened the cuffs. He told me this story, and the only thing I could think of is the scenes from the movies and cartoons about how the kids tie up the babysitter and then wreak havoc on the household!

So, I need a babysitter for a couple of weeks....any takers???

Sounds like a "Key-R-Rect" routine!...none of the chosen keys opened the lock - EXCEPT the final key!

Children shouldn't have access to handcuffs "just lying around" when parent's aren't home. One of these days the child will get stuck in those cuffs, not have a key, have them on too tight, & lose a limb. Or, worse yet, lock him/herself to something, not have a key, and a fire breaks out & well I don't need to explain what happens next. Have some responsibility as a parent! Cops don't leave their loaded guns "just lying around". The same should apply to handcuffs.

Well, my child wasn't alone. I do have enough sense not to leave a ten year old unsupervised. It was the babysitter that was playing around with the handcuffs. He just happened to ask one of his kids to put the cuffs on him.

Wow Margarette,

You certainly have interesting children. I mean, it takes guts to handcuff your babysitter. I realize there are stories like that in literature, but how often does that really happen. I read a story as a kid about a kid named Charlie (forgot the name of the book) but his girlfriend wound up cuffed to a radiator when the kid she was babysitting "sneaked up on her". I don't know how easy that would be to do in real life. I guess the poor fellow let himself get cuffed. Has anyone here ever tried to cuff someone who did not want to be cuffed? It isn't easy as any cop will tell you. That is one of the reasons that cops are so rough and forceful in their attitudes before they subdue their suspect.

Also of course is the story of the father who cuffed a friend of mine as a punishment (1972 before current child abuse laws) and did not realize that his little brother was going to take advantage and slap him around.

You have convinced me lass. When my daughter gets old enough to snoop, all my cuffs are going into a safe.

I was also an accomplished speed-cuffer in my youth. My folks hired a pretty 19-year-old lass to watch over me on several occasions. Through trail and error, I learned to “back load” one cuff while keeping the second cuff locked on the last notch. The first would be quickly applied to the wrist, and while taken by surprise, the second cuff could be easily applied to a stationary object, such as a doorknob, banister railing, etc.

Does anyone remember the classic handcuffing scene in “Who’ll Stop The Rain” with Nick Nolte?

No, but I remember the suprise handcuff scene in Silence of the Lambs when Lector picks open the S&W model 100 (long chain version) while cuffed behind his back to the jail bars then cuffs his suprised jailer to those very same bars. "Ready when you are, Officer Pembrey".

Cheers, Mike

Great to hear from you, Mike!

I sat transfixed through that film. Interesting how Cannibal Lector was eying the pen while wearing a straitjacket, strapped to a hand-truck, and wearing that wicked face mask. It becomes obvious that the pen used in the custodial transfer goes missing, but it is never revealed how Hannibal manages to procure it.

Cheers!

LOL! It sounds as though your son may have already become an adept cuffer on his own. I can’t help but wonder if handcuffing isn’t “in the blood” so to speak. From a very early age, I found that people invariably fell into one of three categories when presented with handcuffs: they were either totally repulsed by them, completely disinterested in them, or quite enthusiastic about them (by far the rarest of people). If the two extremes cancel out, the large majority of people have absolutely no interest in our hobby. I recall how more often than not, I was the only one interested in buying a pair of cuffs for sale at a flea market. With no competing buyers, I often haggled down the already quite reasonable asking price.

Regards,
Jason

PORT ST. LUCIE — Investigators have asked a judge to unseal New York children and family services records they believe will help identify four teenagers found starving in a local woman's home. Judith Leekin, 62, turned herself in to authorities Wednesday. She is being held in lieu of $435,000 bail at the St. Lucie County Jail on five counts of aggravated child abuse, one count of tampering with a witness and one count of possessing a fictitious driver's license. Police say the four teens, ages 15 to 17, found with burns and scars, had been kept for years in Leekin's Port St. Lucie home, at times bound with handcuffs and zip-ties. Police say they believe Leekin adopted the children in New York using at least five aliases. "We believe it was for financial gain," said Captain Scott Bartal of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

The children were found to have counterfeit birth certificates, police said.
