Adams Cuff Notches

The recent ebay listing by Michael Griffin of a second model Adams cuff with eight notches, got me wondering how many models may have been made.

Looking at the two sets I have, the patent applied for set, which had to be made prior to June 17, 1862 (patent date) has 15 notches.

The second set, with the patent date, has 10 notches.

Michaels set has 8 notches. This may look like a third model instead of a second model???

Any thoughts?

We discussed the Adams cuffs on the forum last February. But there is always more to learn.

There are actually quite a few variations of the Adams. In addition to the variable number of notches there are two sizes of cuffs. There are also at least three different linkages. The standard three rings, a twisted chain like the early Tower bottom key cuffs (see Matt Forte's book for a picture) and a swivel.



Top cuff: Adams on a swivel. No markings
Middle cuff: Matching Adams with rings. Marked "Patent Applied For"
Bottom cuff: Smaller version with rings. Marked "Patent Applied For"

All of three cuff have the earlier high notch pattern.

So far all the cuffs either have 8 or 10 notches. I thought I had made a mistake in counting 10 notches on one of sets, so I got the set out again and recounted.

The one bow does have 10 notches but the other bow, of the same set, has 8 notches. This is on the set with the pat date. Another variation????

When I checked them I thought I had mis-counted and the first bow I checked I counted 8 and now I thought I had screwed up the count for the origional posting. Then I checked the other bow and the count was 10. Who knows what they were doing.

Anyway I do have one set, with the pat date that has 8 and 10 notches. They also have the three flat connecting rings.
