Handcuffs as a fashion statement?

I’ve seen handcuff belt buckles, tiepins, and even miniature handcuffs designed to be worn on a leather jacket, but having a cuff attached to your wrist – especially near a courthouse – is really asking for it.

There was a subterranean detention center adjacent to the courthouse in my old neighborhood with a sign that read “All Prisoners Must Be Handcuffed” at the entrance.
I recall how on more than one occasion a prisoner with a concealed pick or key was able to escape before they could be placed in a holding cell. They routinely left them cuffed to a chair or fixed object during trial recesses, etc.

The source of my interest in restraints -- primarily nippers yet handcuffs as well -- was their resemblance to industrial jewellery. Since the early 1980s, I have worn this bracelet, comprising German spring rings obtained from a local hardware store.



On my Web site, I include this comment in my La Pegy handcuffs description, "The La Pegy is more than an handcuff; it is a fashion statement -- an extraordinarily elegant, stylish fashion statement," and state this about the Hiatt's 1960 Pattern handcuffs, "...they were the perfectly styled handcuffs for the stylishly perfect era of Swinging London."

Fashion factors did not and do not sustain my interest in restraints, yet credit where credit is due -- or blame, as you wish.
