Looking at my Clejuso keys, I am a little confusedÂ…

As per the photo, I have two #8 keys…but one has a “tail” on the bit, and the other does not.

Now, officially (via my Clejuso catalog photos) – I know that the bit with the “tail” is the key meant for their #8 non-swing leg iron.

So, why do I have several other marked #8 keys that do not have the “tail” piece?

The other day, I had to open the double-lock on the #15 handcuff, and one of my #8 “tail-less”’keys was able to unlock the DL from only ONE of the cuffs, and not the other one.

Although I have a #15 cuff in my collection – I can’t find a #15 key…so, I am led to believe that one of my #8 keys was sold with it?

Also, I recently obtained a Clejuso marked #13/15” key…which appears somewhat identical to the #8 non-tail key….is this a relatively new key that Clejuso makes?

In short, how interchangeable are these keys – from the #8 leg irons to the #13 & #15 handcuffs, and how come my keys that are marked with a #8 (leg irons) – are without the “tail” piece?

Sorry for all of the questions!

My Clejuso keys of this type are all marked 8 and open all 3 models (the ones without the tailpart I mean). The one with the tailpart only opens the legirons.

I don't know about the #13/15 keys. They are fairly new. The keys that Clejuso sold when they first came out with the heavy cuffs and the no. 8 leg irons were all No. 8 keys. If you look you will see that the keys without the tit are the No. 8 with the tit for the Leg iron and the tit has been ground down. That's the way all of mine are anyway.

I should add that the original keys and the early No. 8 leg irons were not marked in any way and the key had a round head.

Thanks, Peter & Stan.

I brought this up because recently an actress on a gig I was working on (with Mark Cannon) - accidently double-locked her Clejuso #15s.

My own "tail-less" #8 key only opened the DL from ONE cuff, but not the other one.

So, I had to use Mark's Clejuso stamped "13/15" key to open the other DL.

I guess there is be a difference in the diameter and/or barrel-length of the two above keys? ...however, but the 'bits' look identical to me.

Hi,

Clejuso and their keys is a never ending story, especially with the #8s - we had quite some discussion about those in my german forum already.

So here a few things:
- The key with the tail is a newer #8 key - they somewhen changed the #8 lock so only a key with the tail will open the double lock. This is dangerous as a "quick check" of the unlocked legirons will also work with the tailless key. Why that change was introduced is subject to speculation. Security considerations, so that someone grabbing the handcuff key can't open the (double locked) legirons?
- before that change there was no real difference between #8 and #13/15 keys, so some #8 keys were not even labeled, and it might well be that also keys stamped #8 were sold with 13/15 cuffs. Possibly even after the change on the leg irons was introduced, to sell off the old #8 keys, but then they started to stamp the "old" key Nr. 13/15 and the new one with the Tail Nr. 8
- there are at least two slightly different sizes of #8 keys, which are not fully interchangeable. I know people having two pairs of #8s and the keys from one won't fit the other - as far as I remember the inner diameter of the pin-hole is different.

So one question would be: were you able to fully insert the #8 key into the #15 cuff? I have a #15 where the key needs some force to go deep enough into the keyhole to be turned, but it looks inserted quite OK before that already - so some people already thought the cuff was stuck as they couldn't turn the key. So I would guess your key wasn't deep enough in the keyhole, either because you didn't try hard enough, or because your #8 key is one of the smaller ones and doesn't fit over the pin in the #15 (and probably also wouldn't fit all #8s).

BTW, just in case: the #15 double lock can relatively easy be slammed open by hitting the cuff on the ground in the right direction - like I showed with the #12 on the convention, just easier. Then the cuff can be shimmed easily. But be sure not to hit the moveable bow of the cuff, as that might break parts in the lock %-)

Thanks, Martin - for the add'l information.

Glad I wasn't the only one who was a bit confused about the keys & their function.

Somewhere on the web I saw internal pictures of the locks and some of the parts are made of pot metal and when subjected to enough force, break. So from what I gathered is that you don't force these lock mechanisms like they were made of all steel parts.

Hi,

I'm sure you mean these pictures:
http://www.handschellen.org/sammlung/cjs06.html

and that's the reason why I advised to make sure not to hit the moveable bow when slamming the DL open. It's the wrong direction anyway When slamming the cuffs with the massive part that shouldn't have too much impact on the lock, and I don't think you can break it by trying to insert a key a little harder either.
