As a few of you may know, I am trying to get info on handcuffs my brother had before I even attempt to sell them or put any up on ebay. I have seen some pics of these types of handcuffs, but I have not seen any of these particular ones. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Becky

Hi,

this is a Clejuso 12R, see for example Guenter's Page at
http://www.atame.info/CU_Deutschland2.htm

Its the predecessor of the current Clejuso 12 cuffs and was used around the 1970s. Not an especially valuable piece though, at least here in germany as there are quite a lot around, but a nice stainless steel cuff anyway. And it introduced the finger activateable double lock which is still standard on todays clejusos and a pretty neat thing(*).

Greetings,
Martin
(*) also for escape artists, but that's a different story.

These cuffs are also known as the "Bavarian Variant" if I am correct.

Hi,

@germanhandcuffs: not exactly, as all Clejuso 12R have the "full" key there's no special bavarian edition of the 12R. I know there are some pages out there calling the 12R bavarian, but a true bavarian version exists of the current Clejuso No. 12 (see http://www.cuffsland.de / under Germany the No. 12 BY:

which was made on request of the bavarian police so the police officers could continue using just one type of key when switching to the current No. 12 cuffs. But this is a current No. 12 - not the 12R we're talking about here.

@Joe: I didn't differntiate the sub-models here, the history is 12D, 12R and current 12. There are at least 3 different 12Rs I know of, but it might well be clejuso mixed some more, which characteristica marks the first model for you? I know of two charcteristica for 12Rs:
- a very small one, the chain-mounting: there's a flat one, and one "bend out" a little like you can see here. I think the bend out one is newer
- the chain itself: there's a version with rotating swivel and one with just 3 chain links, no swivel. I would NOT call the chain-link version "first model" as I think it was a cheap model made later - for whatever reason. They ran out of swivels or whatever Some (like Enris) even are not sure if this model really should be called 19R or is a different model. These also have a slightly different shaped bow.

When you look at Enris page http://www.handschellen.org/sammlung/cjs04.html#12r you can see two 12Rs, the one like seen here (swivel, bend out mounting) and the 3 link-flat-mounted-chain one. On this picture:

you can see the third version I mentioned, the "flat" mounting as in the chain-version, but with a swivel. I think the swivel 12R in this picture is the oldest version of all BTW, but I have no evidence for that. Below this again the simple chain version.

So to bring it to a point:
- chain vs. swivel doesn't have to mean version 1 or 2, I don't know of any evidence the chain version was first, and as the 12D had a swivel I wouldn't assume it was first, but that it was made on special request, due to lack of parts or simply as a cheaper version.
- the detail at the chain mounting could be randomly used in no chronological order. It's my impression that Clejuso doesn't really care much about such details and uses whichever parts they have in the moment.

Greetings,
Martin

MARTIN: in these modern junk cuffs, i myself do not count these slight CHAIN differences at all.... the FIRST model had 2 types of LINKAGE, which i don't count or could care less about... the specific differnce between the 1ST model & the 2nd model is that the 1st model had -- PROTRUDING -- lock buttons & the 2nd model had a FLUSH lock buttons or surface height... now that is what i call a manufacturing model differnce... not much, but still a difference as that makes the CUFFS themselfs different.... joe

Hi Joe,

hm, I can't follow you completeley. Are you talking of different Clejuso 12R models (that's what I assumed, sorry for any confusion), or did you mean that there's another "12" series cuff (the 12D) which was before the 12R? This of course is true, but that's a completely different handcuff (different shape and so) and doesn't have a lock button at all (and there are 6 or more versions of that arround, differing in weight and function).

So I see the 12D as the predecessor of the 12R and the 12R as the predecessor of the 12, but wouldn't call the "12R" the "2nd model No. 12", even though that wouldn't really be wrong. So if you just meant that you're right, except for the fact that the 12D doesn't have a lock button. Not even all 12Ds are lockable...

Martin
P.S.: there is a cuff looking very much like the 12D which has a protruding lock button, which is not a Clejuso but an A.W.Naht
