looks like your hunt'n buddy thinks it is APRIL -- APRIL FOOLS on you as he must have planted them in the barn an hour before you arrived or whatever... they are garbage reproductions probably made within the last few months... look on EBAY as they are there all the time.... guess your buddy got ya !!! joe

I have to agree with Joe on this. I have to look at DOZENS of sets of these (the handcuffs by themselves, the leg irons by themselves, or both together as a set) every time I go searching for real antique cuffs. Do a search on eBay under "old handcuffs", "vintage handcuffs", "leg irons", "antique handcuffs" or anything of the like and you will find the EXACT set pictured here. Looks at these: <a href=http://cgi.ebay.com/OLD-WEST-CHAINGANG- ... em>classic fakes</a> I found these in about ten seconds....need I say more??? lol!

Your antique dealer may know something about some antiques in general - but he obviously is no expert on handcuffs.

of course they don't LOOK new. Otherwise they wouldn't be called fakes, would they?

Your dealer is right when judging by the TYPE of restraint, this "darby" type was used 100+ years ago up to roughly the first half of the last century. But by looking on the details you posted it's easy to tell the difference between the "real thing" and those reproductions, and yours are the reproductiosn. From India or Mexico I would guess. They don't have to be brand new like someone suggested, might well be a few years old, but that wouldn't change anything about the value. Follow the posted auction and you might get a better estimation for the real value - but beware, if at least two people get fooled by the auction it may go unrealistic high.

If you read the auction text carefully you'll notice the seller writes: AUTHENTIC (emphazised in blue, but then followed by:) look and feel. So he knows what he's selling there. Nothing from the old west... just looking and feeling old.

They're Indian reproductions. I can get you a dozen pair at $25.00 a pair. Several Indian Junque wholesalers carry them.

To follow up on my last, (I hate this board's inability to edit!) look carefully at the construction. The chain is electrically welded. The straps that form the hinge is made of sheet metal, folded over. The bows are made of strap iron. They're covered with saw and file marks. The finish isn't so much a patina, as a light coat of rust.

Compare the construction and patina with the cuffs that head this section. You, as a neophyte, will be able to spot the difference at a hundred yards.

To make those worth something, you got a three step process

#1 go bury them back in the barnyard where your friend found them

#2 leave them there for a century or so

#3 let some sucker who hasn't even been born yet dig them up and market them as a 21st century fake

Date = Feb.
Value = $45.

I too agree with the above opinions.
I know that you do not want to believe it and think that we are wrong somehow, but rest assured that these are indeed modern reproductions and this can be stated with 100% certainty.
Sorry to bust the bubble on this, but there is absolutely no chance that they are authentic.
