T. H. & Co. An unknown British make.

I just purchased the handcuff shown above. It is marked T.H.&Co. with a date of 1868. (The last digit is a little hard to read.)

Alex Nichols shows a similar T.H.&Co. cuff with an 1858 date in his "Guidebook to Handcuffs" on page 72, but he has no information about the company.

This particular cuff is very well made. The key matches the one in Alex's book so it is likely the original. The body of cuff is similar to a Froggatt.

Does anyone have any information about T.H.&Co.?

T. H. & Co. might be none other than Hiatt himself.

I likely am dead wrong, but at least it reads well.

Your suggestion is not unreasonable. I considered it myself, but I don't think it is correct.

I don't think the name Thomas Hiatt & Co. was ever used. By the time these cuffs were made the name of the company was Hiatt & Co. Ltd and the company head was William John Hiatt.

Plus the cuffs simply don't look like Hiatts, the look more like Froggatts.

But who knows? anything is possible.

I now have the set of handcuffs illustrated in Alex Nichols books marked TH & Co. They are date stamped 1858 and have their original key. They were originally nickel plated but now only retain about 50% plating. I like the theory about Thomas Hiatt but can not agree. I feel it far more likely they were Thewlis & Co. My only reservation is that now looking closely at them they do seem to be marked T.H & Co. (rather than TH & Co). The date stamp on mine are on the opposit bow. Any way only a possibility.
