RARE authentic E.R. leg iron for sale

Hello all,

I recently acquired and will now be offering for sale an authentic and very rare E.R. single leg iron with fully functional original key.

This is NOT a padlock and is no doubt a super rare E.R. single leg iron.

I have closely looked at it and it bears no mark of any pre existing clevis and was no doubt hand forged by E.R. to be part of a "link onto chain " type restraint or ball and chain rig where it could be completely removed from the chain if needed.

This is 100% authentic with dark brown patina, in fully owrking order, stamped E.R. and with original left hand threaded key.

My experience is that the ER handcuffs and legirons had a clevis for the chain and the padlocks did not. How can you be sure this is part of a legiron and not a handcuff ?

It is far too large to be a handcuff iron.

It is 100% authentic and I have pics to prove it.

I own the single E.R. leg iron and it is here on my desk right now.

In any event, that should in no way be the issue.

That I have something rare and someone will want it IS.

And, like in the past, I have chosen to offer it here to the SERIOUS collectors who may want it (No annon posters need apply).

This is, to my knowledge, the only single E.R. non clevis leg iron ever found let alone offered.

If someone can prove otherwise I stand corrected and will happily admit so but I have a feeling that I will be waiting a LONG time for such "proof".

In any event, I will gladly be pleased to hear from dedicated and serious collectors who may have an interest.

Hello,

I have sent 5 pics to Joe at his Handcuffs.org e mail account and hopefully he may be kind enough to post them.

The iron measures (inside the shackle walls) 3 inches one way and 3 1/4 inches the other.

The lock tube is 4 inches long.

To big for a handcuff or a padlock yet perfect for an ankle.

This is certainly a leg iron.

Very nice item. The ER marking and the key are both very close matches to my handcuff.

It looks like there is mark above the "E R". Is that a number? I can't quite make it out. Most of the handcuffs seem to have serial numbers on them. Does yours have such a number? On my handcuff the key also has a number.

I don't have any doubt that this is an authentic ER item.

One could argue about its original function. It could have been used as a "gate lock." It could have been used as a shackle for an ankle. But it is certainly over 150 years old and it is a very interesting addition to the E R legacy.

I have a pair of ER handcuffs and I have seen pictures of leg irons. I have also seen pictures of ER padlocks which have some similarities, but are of much smaller size. ER is credited as having made the first known railroad padlock for the B&O railroad.

The cuff is shaped just like the handcuffs and the leg irons. I think it may very well have been used as a shackle.
In any case it is a very neat item.

I now have Steve's shackle.

Thanks very much Steve, that was the best 20 bucks I ever spent.

The shackle is in excellent condition. It is a very nice match to my E.R. pair of handcuffs.

The shackle comes with what is likely the number matched original key. Both the cuff and the key are marked with the number "5" in the same font. My handcuff and its key are both marked 1020.

Good question. The key is left handed. In my survey of ER handcuffs 5 out of 6 were left handed, only 1 right handed.
