Wow! Someone got $415 for a pair of Mattatuck handcuffs. These typically go for about $175 in excellent condition with original key. A pair of Union Towers also went for $355. As pricey as these were, they still seem a better buy than a pair of used Colt cuffs for a whopping $304.99. These sellers couldn’t have hoped to do much better!

JASON: wake up & don't smell the roses.... i am sure that for the most part the seller ended up buying them back himself... shill bidders.... but if the seller just sold one item to a non shill bidder, he still came out as if he sold two items.... doesn't take any brains to figure out that all 3 of the sellers items went double - triple the normal price... ask yourself why other towers etc that have sold since & the ones on ebay currently arn't going for double-triple... i know as i seller, i am lucky to get $125. for a nicer cuff complete with a working key.... MANY MANY of the sellers have 6 & 8 ebay accounts & use them to prop up the prices... thus they rotate their accounts.... joe

First of all, I don’t care four your obnoxious, condescending remarks. Anyone that wasn’t sniffing glue in the fourth grade would have learned how to structure a simple sentence without so many periods. (… … … )

Secondly, I have been on e-bay since the onset, and shill bidding is hardly a new practice there. You could shill the price for a million dollars, but it will only increase the price to highest bidder’s maximum. Setting a reserve is cheaper and also has the benefit of allowing the seller to re-list the item without breaking the law.

I know the buyer of the colt cuff is someone from holland
he is in the beginning no handcuffcollector but he like guns and stuff
but he forgot what I told him and places a big bid on the colt cuffs
it is exactly what they say there are shill bidders and look for the highest price so that friend of mine from holland made this mistake to put a to high price on it
it is a shame but true

Recently I bid $150 for a cuff that I wanted, but was not particularly concerned about. I was the high bidder at about $90 going into the last few minutes. At that point an otherwise unknown bidder who normally bids on clothing items only, put in a high bid and won the auction.

Within a few minutes of the auction closing I had a note from the seller saying that the winning bid had been "withdrawn" and that I could have the cuff for my $150. I wrote back and told the dealer that I would be pleased to give him the $90 if he posted the cuff again as a "buy it now" listing, but that I was certainly not going to give him the $150 and I was certainly was not going to deal with him outside of eBay.

He did not accept my offer.

"Less than ethical" fairly describes the whole world. I suppose eBay is a fair microcosm of it.

Some years ago, I had a similar experience. I do not recall whether it was on eBay or another auction site. When the dealer contacted me and offered me the article at my high bid, though, I told him I would pay what I would have paid had the non-paying high bidder never entered the picture, i.e., I would pay the amount for what I otherwise would have won the auction. The dealer was good with that and I got the item, undoubtedly a chain nipper although I have no clear, specific recollection. This seemed the logical way to approach the issue.

As to the other Joe in this thread, Tanner, and to logical approaches to issues, it grows thinner and thinner that persons don't or won't simply let Tanner speak his mind, have his say, make his point or whatever -- the man is not a blithering idiot -- without pointlessly provoking him. First and foremost, he has the best initials anyone can have, JT. Beyond that, repeatedly ragging on Joe Tanner's compositionally-challenged English is old hat. A bit of tolerance wouldn't harm anyone. Then again, it might come perilously close to being ethical...

JACK & ATLANTA :: thank you !!! to all, i believe my excuse (feeble as it may be) as to why i cap words etc etc. is from my 25 years + of doing MAIL ORDER lists with SOME photos of handcuffs... also did lists for padlocks as well as for western items.... also did 5 years of putting out the ESCAPISM newsletter booklet ... althou my lovely wife did most of the work on the ESCAPISM.... IF i remember collectly, during the 1st year or so of doing the various lists i would talk to prospective buyers on the TELEPHONE - for you youngsters - yea TELEPHONE back in them OLD days - after they received the list....i would ask them various questions about an item on the list & many would reply -- i did not see that item.... many would scan the list quickly searching for the particuliar item or items that they were looking for so that IF the item was on the list they would call right away to buy it as they knew items for the most part sold quickly... many clients would also end up buying an item or two that they had just scanned over..... therefore, i learned to HIGHLIGHT & it has stuck with me... good or bad..... and now you know the rest of the story !!!! take care.... joe

I remember the lists that Joe mailed out many years ago. I still have them in my file.

The Story Lock Joe is referring to is indeed a rare one. One thing that would help is when you click on a bidders name you can get the area where they live. It would help if this was more specific, since eBay does not give the bidders name anymore, if they would list the city or more percise information on the location of the bidder this might help identify some of the multiple accounts.

One more thing about Joe, he most likely has forgotten more about handcuffs and locks than most of us know. Lets not make this Forum into a Jerry Springer show.

I complained to the auction site years ago about the fact that unlike
a live auction where you can see the other bidders, the bidders on the
auction site are invisible, leaving the buyer trusting the seller to be honest.

I lamented to them that giving the zip code to zero in on potential
shill bidders would give the buyer something to at least identify
the area where competing bids are coming from.

I was told that some bidders like to bid on items from sellers that
are close to them and while my idea was a good one it could possibly
make buyers reluctant to bid if a competing bidder just happened to
live in the same area.

With the new and improved auction site bidder policy,
(hidden identity of bidders when an item reaches the $200 dollar mark),
Sellers are free to get whatever price for their items that the market will bear.

I agree that bidder transparency was much more in accord with fair trading practice.
Unfortunately – since often times the bidder also sells through the venue – dishonest sellers were holding their own auctions and circumventing the e-bay commission fees.
Many of us have asked a seller to provide additional information, only to receive a sleazy offer to participate in an off-line auction. When the seller finds a few willing participants, the auction is canceled.

Looking at the bright side of things, there wouldn’t be so many interesting handcuffs to collect if everyone was honest.

Although I don't often buy handcuffs anymore, I still keep all the flyers Joe Tanner put out when I first started collecting. Great source of information in many respects - things that might not make it onto web sites for various reasons but to me they are still an interesting 'read'.
E-bay is a frustrating venue for buyers as it is pretty much catering to bulk volume dealers. I wish I kept a copy of the various ebay follies that a friend sent me - including 'one of a kind chess sets' that were mass produced or the guy who auctioned his services to 'beat you up' Some great stuff!
