My Hiatt Speedcuffs

Hi,

I know these arn't really collectable but my Hiatt speefcuffs (the ones the british police use) are stuck, neither side will move!

any help? if not here can anyone direct me to where i might be able to find some help?

Have you checked to see if they are double locked? I can't imagine any other reason why both sides would freeze up at the same time.

I am new to handcuffs, this is the first pair ive had

how do i check if they are double locked? and how do they get to this status?

If you don't know about the double lock on modern cuffs, maybe you should not be playing with them. It could be dangerous.
There is a little round recessed button onthe edge of the cuff. If it is depressed than the cuff is double locked. If it is flush with the rest of the edge than it is not double locked. the double lock is removed by rotating the key til the button pops up.

If you carry your cuffs on your belt, like I do at the store, the double lock is to prevent the cuffs from swinging open if you accidently bump your cuffs on something. If you use a closed cuff case this isn't necessary. One trick I have is when I'm following a shoplifter, I quietly unlock the double lock function so there ready to go when I snap them on the perp.

Okay now that I am over that, let's get down to some basics here...

The function of the double lock as we call it is to prevent the cuffs from tightening any more. This prevents them from being bumped while someone is locked in them and tightening on them to cause harm. On your cuffs if you haven't figured this out yet to unlock them from single lock position lets get some sort of orientation. For example, with the key hole facing you, and the bow(the part that swings through with the saw tooth edge) is to your right, so will the keyhole. Insert key and turn counter clockwise and hold key in that position while pulling the bow out. Now if doubled locked, rotate key clockwise till it stops, one should feel a slight click. Then turn key counter clockwise to unlock the cuffs. NEVER FORCE THE KEY TO UNLOCK HANDCUFFS, a broken key in the lock is a royal pain in the rear to deal with. To do the other cuff, just reverse what you did for this side.

Now as to Mr. Security, there are a number of handcuff cases to do what you want to do to carry them on your belt and you don't have to double lock them. I know of at least 2 styles that will do the job and depends on what works best for you. Maybe you should take a class on handcuffing techniques because I would be laughing my ass off if I saw you having to unlock them to cuff someone.
